Seahawks quarterback Josh Portis is running out of lives.

First reported by Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times, the third-year pro was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on May 5. Portis has an arraignment hearing scheduled at the Redmond courthouse scheduled for May 28.

According to the police report, a Washington State Patrol officer pulled Portis over at 9:26 p.m. on May 5 after observing him driving 80 miles per hour in a 60-mile-an-hour zone exiting the Mount Baker tunner heading eastbound on Interstate 90 in a 2008 Range Rover.

Per the report, Portis initially refused to take a breath test on site, but later submitted to two blood tests, registering a blood-alcohol concentration reading of .092 and .078. The legal limit in the state of Washington is .080. Portis has been charged with a gross misdemeanor.

Portis is in a competition for the backup starting quarterback job with Brady Quinn and Jerrod Johnson. The 25-year-old signal caller was released from the practice squad last November, and then re-signed to the 90-man roster in April.

Also, the team announced that second-round draft selection Christine Michael has signed a multi-year deal, and tight end Darren Fells re-signed with the team.

Long snapper Adam Steiner, who the Seahawks claimed off waivers (Oakland) last week, was released this morning.

Cornerback Tharold Simon and offensive tackle Michael Bowie are the only draft picks that remain unsigned.

  1. Portis must be dumb as a box of rocks. You can’t have QBs stealing credit cards and driving drunk. Later, dude.

  2. yankinta says:

That Dude had zero chance to make the team anyway,, I hear he’s 4th best QB right now and we will only carry 2 QB on the roster. We will carry 5 WR’s and 5 RB’s and we need that 3rd QB Roster spot to do so.

  3. JZombie says:

While Portis may be familiar with the system, that’s unfortunately not the system we’d like him to be familiar with.

And there goes the Long Snapper competition for now.

  4. Unbelievable.

  5. Not only near or above the limit, but driving 20 over in Redmond?! Mensa reject for sure.

Everyone can make a mistake–I have made a similar one–but compounding the D&D with excessive speed is beyond stupid.

Hopefully he learns from it. I still dont think he should lose his job, unless this mistake is part of a pattern of behavior we know nothing about, or if it becomes same. And I dont give a good goddamn if he is a qb.

  6. Bobbyk–Not to light your fuse, but I would have expected you to expect this. Steal a credit card at 19 etc and of course he will get in trouble five years later…or perhaps I not giving you enough credit.

  7. I told you guys Fells was caught in a numbers game, and not necessarily because he cant play. They thought enough of him to give him another shot. Still a miracle longshot to make the team…

  8. Not taking the bait. Can’t wait to read the practice report later.

  9. chuck_easton says:

Yes practice report! Great time to move on. Need something positive to read.

  10. Good for you Bobbyk! Way to take the high road. I applaud your restraint. I cant wait to hear the practice report either.

chuck_easton–Yeah, at least we have all but two rookies signed. And low-class hawk-haters are posting comments on other sites making fun of Christine Michael’s name. But he’s signed, and he’s ours! (So I guess his name is supposedly pronounced Christian?!)

  11. FleaFlicker says:

STTBM: I’m sure the first couple times Christine Michael runs over an LB on his way to the end zone – that will end the name “controversy”

  12. ChrisHolmes says:

    And there is is.

Way to live down to expectations Josh.

  13. Geeze. Whats next?

  14. chuck_easton says:

    STTBM,

I kind of like that his name is spelled Christine (and only his parents know for sure. It could be a family mane or t could be something as innocuous as it was misspelled on the Birth certificate…people don’t realize if your parents write down your first name as Betty-boop that is now your legal name and yu can only change it by petitioning the court).

Can you imagine the first time he runs over a defender and the guy has to go back to hs bench only to be teased about getting beat up by a guy named Christine? That is power on our side! ;)

  15. Dukeshire says:

    It’s pronounced “Kristin”…

  16. GeorgiaRay says:

.092 and .078? Hardly comparing with the PED issues seriously….

  17. Southendzone says:

Not a big deal about Portis, he wasn’t going to beat out even Jeron Johnson on the roster this year. If they keep 3, it will be Quinn & Johnson as backups

  18. too confuzen – i’m callin him chris michael.

  19. chuck_easton says:

    GeorgiaRay,

In Canada at least the presence of one test over the limit and a later test under the limit can be used as a mitigating factor. It indicates the alcohol in the blood stream was already on its way down. If portis had waited another 1/2 hour before driving its likely both tests would be under the limit.

This is one i could easily see a pleato a lesser charge of careless driving.

  20. sluggo42 says:

It’s is ouch for him, and I don’t think he ever had a chance anyways. I’m guessing JJ becomes #3, if not #2….

Do you wonder why RW isn’t getting caught doing anything stupid?

  21. sluggo42 says:

I can’t wait to see cristin run the rock. I think he is going to be like a huge Leon Washington…in his prime…

  22. Skavage says:

I gotta agree with Chuck on this one. With a test under he’ll likely see the DUI dropped and a lesser traffic offense in it’s place.

That said, I would not be surprised at all to see us go with 2 QB’s on the roster and the RealRob ™ acting as the emergency QB.

  23. turin07 says:

sigh…I could blow a point-nine-two on a box of crackerjax. DUI BS is gonna ruin GOOD lives. Doing 80 in a 60 THAT’S the real crime. ‘yeah but what about the poor victims blah blah’ It isn’t the casual drinker. It’s the impatient. They should arrest impatient tailgaters. They cause MOST accidents.

  24. raymaines says:

I’ve said before I really like the Jerrod Johnson story and I wish him well.

Most of you said he’s just camp fodder and I should get over it and
I suppose you’re right. Time will tell.

But has a marginal talent guy ever been handed a better opportunity than Jerrod Johnson? RW is clearly #1, BQ is #2 and all JJ has to do is prove himself to be the 53rd best guy on the roster. We’re not exactly talking QB’s, just be the 53rd best athlete in camp.

Come on, dude. I’m pulling for you.

  25. raymaines says:

Crap! In my vain attempt at proofreading, I left out my whole thought about Josh Portis excusing himself from the competition. You guys dream up whatever you think I meant to say and stick that thought into the middle of it somewhere, OK.
