The Seattle Seahawks announced today that the team waived/injured cornerback Chandler Fenner and claimed long snapper Adam Steiner off waivers (Oakland).

Steiner signed as an undrafted rookie free agent with Oakland on April 29 after snapping four years at the University of Akron.

Seattle’s current long snapper, Clint Gresham, is due to make $1.323 million in base salary in 2013.

Fenner signed to Seattle’s practice squad on December 6, 2012.

The Seahawks claim a long snapper!!

Hot damn, Super Bowl here we come.

  2. GeorgiaHawk says:

So how much would we save with Steiner as opposed to Gresham?

  3. JZombie says:

Oh wow, competition at long snapper now, fortunately this time it’s not because we have a pressing need for one.

Anyone in to compete with Jon Ryan? No position left uncontested!

  4. bbnate420 says:

    About 900K.

  5. GeorgiaHawk says:

900K?- Dam, Time to sign tired.

It’s funny that a story like this gets any comments at all let alone this many.

  7. banosser says:

the only comment should be.. $1.3M for a long snapper???

  8. Dukeshire says:

Long snapper is the most unsung position on the team. Punters and place kickers are the only ones who love them.

  9. But EVERYONE hates them when something goes wrong -

  10. Crack all the jokes you like, but it’s only funny when you when you have a LS that properly does his job. When you have a long snapper that sucks it is no laughing matter. It is the type of weakness that can cost you games. If you’ve followed this team long enough the name Boone Stutz might jog your memory as to just how relevant a reliable long snapper is.

  11. Funny article about Gresham, but somebody needs to school me up here. Cornhole? Really? In my day you’d get kicked out of school for saying that.

  12. SaigonSun says:

What is a cornhole? (Darn ignorant foreigners)

  13. Mama always said I should have learned to long snap.

  14. Gresham should count as a long-term veteran, and under the NFL’s rules, they get to count only a portion of veterans salaries against the cap, instead of the whole thing. This is supposed to prevent guys like Gresham getting cut because they cost more than rookies or young players who arent quite as good. But Im not sure–perhaps Gresham is in between and so isnt eligible for that team discount.

Obviously Seattle is a) serious about the competition at every position and b) pretty tight with the cap and wanting to roll over all the cap space they can for next year, when guys like Tate, ET, Sherm, etc will either be re-signed, extended, or will be lost.

LS is not a position you want to have problems with. Remember when every punt was a freaking adventure?! Like Bilbo Baggins said, the “Nasty, uncomfortable (kind)…make one late for dinner”! Gresham has done a fantastic job, and I’d hate to see him lose his gig.

Today i’m too sore to work in the garden, i’m taking the day off.
I’ve been busy and laying low when i do get a chance to read. There’s a bunch of ex cult members who bug the crap out of me at the hot springs so i’m taking time off there as well, they’re never totally ex anyways and i’d just as soon kick their ass than listen to a bunch of brainwashing and preaching. Even though it seems like i’m not present, i do appreciate
all the commentary on the Hawks. After i get my garden going i’ll comment more even though i say some idiotic things from time to time. This is the hardest part of the year for me until pre-season.

  16. banosser says:

I realize how relavent a LS is.. and yes I remember the utterly embarrassing LS fiasco from yrs ago.. that said.. every freakin college team in America has a LS.. and from all the college football I watch I’d say they are 98+% reliable.. it’s not like these guys are a rareity… I’m sure for $600k/yr you could have 2 doz LS in here competeing for the position… can the LS even be hit any more??

  17. montanamike2–Hot springs tend to draw the freaks and goons, for sure. Good luck with the garden and dealing with the freaks. No worries, we all say some stupid stuff from time to time. Fan is short for fanatic, after all…

  18. SandpointHawk says:

Sorry guys, when I saw that headline…I couldn’t help myself. Yes, 40 years ago, cornhole had an entirely different meaning….

  19. chuck_easton says:

    banosser,

I am going to have to respectfully but STRONGLY dis-agree. Long snapping is a precise and very skilled position. As you said, every college team has one. And of those the 32 best get a job in the NFL.

And guess what, the ONLY job the LS has on the team is long snapping. If any college center or any pro center could do it then the position wouldn’t be as valuable.

A LS is like that rubber gasket in your faucet. As long as it is there and doing its job, you never even think about it. If it fails you are going to have a flood.

That is why NFL teams pay for the position. If you get a solid dependable LS’er you pay him and you keep him.

You would be suprised if you went through the NFL player history stats and saw how many men had very long and very successful careers doing nothing but snapping a ball between their legs and making sure it hits the punter/holder right in the hands.

Even on my Bantam team (13-14 year olds) we have a designated LS’er. As the o-line coach I work with that kid for 45 minutes before each and every practice just on his long snaps. One bad snap can and almost always DOES cost you the game.

  20. SaigonSun says:

Thanks Duke. I had different impression ….

  21. HawkFromDay1 says:

Remember when we let JP Darche go? That stunk…

Then in Ruskell’s extremely finite wisdom he wasted a 5th round pick on Tyler Schmitt – a long snapper – with a chronic spine condition who never played a snap.

Worst draft pick in Hawks history. Keep Gresham – stop thinking so hard and pay him the stupid money. Consistency is worth the extra $500K.

  22. banosser says:

Chuck… I appreciate what you are saying… but Greshem will be making almost 3 times what Russell Wilson is..

  23. bbnate420 says:

Cornhole still does have that other connotation predominantly. Not sure why that name was picked for that game?

Steiner will come in and compete. Just like K Wiggs. I don’t think they give the job to either Wiggs or Steiner if they don’t clearly outplay their competition. There is money to be saved, but LS and K have a DRAMATIC effect winning and losing games. Too much many would argue.

  24. bbnate420 says:

Can you imagine the pissing and moaning on this blog if they cut Gresham for Steiner and he blew a snap that led to the Hawks losing in the NFC Championship or SB? Even a regular season game that hurts their playoff seeding and costs them at least a home playoff game? I surely can. You don’t handicap a potential SB team for 900K. That’s just stupid.

  25. madpunter88 says:

Signing a long snapper right before OTAs should not be taken as a sign that the team is going to cut Gresham. They need more than one LS for all of the practices coming up over the next few months… It is hard to manage multiple special teams drills without more than one guy doing all the snapping. And if they like the guy they keep him on speed dial in case Gresham gets injured.

  26. banosser says:

OK… $1.3+M for a LS… RDub is gonna make $526k in ’13.. JS/PC have found Sherman, Kam, KJ, Scruggs, Sweezy, Turbin, Smith, Baldwin all late rounds or UD.. but they can’t come up with a DIR LS…

Sherman is gonna make $555k this yr…

  27. bbnate420 says:

It doesn’t matter what any of those other players are making. That’s TOTALLY beside the point. Those players can’t renegotiate yet. The point is having a reliable LS so that they don’t lose a game because of it. You don’t risk losing an important game over 900K when you’re a SB contender. That’s stupid. If Steiner can beat out Gresham then fine, but you don’t just hand him the job.
