Here’s some more notes from this morning’s presser with Carroll

* Carroll said that Brandon Mebane will start at nose tackle and new addition Alan Branch will serve as the team’s 3-tech moving forward. Carroll seemed to indicated that once Colin Cole could be out for awhile. Once Cole is healthy, then both he and Mebane will compete for time at that position, with Mebane having the versatility to slide over to 3-tech. But for now, Mebane and Branch are the starters inside.

Carroll said that Branch is an underrated player who performed well against Seattle last season. Branch had five tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble against the Seahawks up in Seattle last year in the first game, and two tackles in the game down in Arizona.

“We’re going to play those two guys inside,” Carroll said. “The other aspect that Alan brings is that he brings the length that Red (Bryant) has, so he will back up at five-technique when we need him to.”

* The Seahawks will have padded practices every other day during training camp on the days the Seahawks only have one practice. The first padded practice is on Sunday.

* Carroll is upset with the rule that keeps players who just sign free agent deals from practicing until the new CBA is completed and the league year begins on Thursday.

“In this one instance, I just don’t understand how Tavaris (Jackson) and Sidney (Rice) and Robert (Gallery) and those guys can have a chance to be at their best, and best protected in just a number of days’ time,” Carroll said. “So I’m hoping that something happens here in the next couple of days with some consideration and understanding for that.”

* Carroll said that the Seahawks will lean on the experience of Gallery with the team’s young offensive line.

“Robert is a gifted kid as far as understanding schemes,” he said. “He will be the captain of the offensive line in that regard. We’re going to need him.”

Carroll also said he’s looking forward to seeing how Max Unger does at center.

* It also appears that veteran safety Lawyer Milloy will not be returning this season, although Carroll did not rule it out entirely. “I talked to Lawyer. Know that I love that guy. He’s one of my favorite guys. I’ve been with him for years and years. I told him at this tme we’re going to go with our guys that we have. He’s in great shape, he’s one of the best conditioned athletes in the history of the league, and he’s in incredible shape right now. If the opportunity arises where we can do something, he knows we’ll be the first to call him, but he’s got other clubs that could do the same.”

A couple notes from practice. Rookie free agent Doug Baldwin and corners Byron Maxwell and Richard Sherman made some nice plays during the morning practice.

Even with rookie offensive guard John Moffitt in camp, Paul Fanaika continues to work at right guard with the first unit.

Second-year safety Kam Chancellor also appears to be getting comfortable with the first unit and made a couple nice plays.

Restricted free agent offensive tackle Tyler Polumbus signed his tender and is in camp.

  1. The team missed the boat by not trading for Eagles DT Broderik Bunkley!

  2. GeorgiaHawk says:

This is the 2nd day now that we have heard something good about Richard Sherman! I remember those that said they didn’t see much in him when he got drafted. This kid has everything you would want in a cornerback except experience, and that was not his fault that Stanford put him at WR for much of the time. Good to hear he is proving the doubters wrong!

I fully agree with Carroll that not allowing signed free agents practice until Aug-4th is putting them in jeopardy for injury! They need to change that now!

  3. Dukeshire says:

Branch played some 3 tech in Ariz so it shouldn’t be too much of an adjustment. He’s so massive, I don’t see how he won’t be able to really push the pocket, especially one on one as the undertackle. And I like the idea of ‘Bane moving back to NT. This is a big, versatile line.

A coach unhappy he can’t play with his new toys right away? No! Lol. I’m sure every coach in the league feels this way. And it really doesn’t make much sense.

Eric, has Lofa returned this afternoon and I not, why is he out? Thanks

  4. Dukeshire says:

GeorgiaHawk – I was one that expressed skepticism. It’s so early yet, but no question it’s nice to hear positive things. I presumed (and still do) he’s a long term project. I would love to be wrong about that.

And I’m glad to hear Maxwell’s name there as well.

  5. williambryan says:

It’s just that Sherman’s highlight tape wasn’t that impressive, but again, Carroll knows what he’s doing. I’m a little surprised that Branch will be handed a starting spot. Maybe it’s a challenge for Cole to pick it up a little bit? It seams like Carroll is a little concerned about the relatively short amount of time for the team to get ready…

  6. Pete has said that the fact that UFA’s can not get in until next Thursday is the basis for many of the decisions. and Cole will not be ready until week 2 of the season I thought I heard so it makes sense that Branch maybe a started.

It is odd though – last year here he didn’t announce any starters it seemed – you had to guess based on who was practicing with the with the first unit.

  7. DisplacedSeahawkFan says:

Amobi Okoye was released by the Texans. He’d make a good addition, plus he’d be reasonably priced.

  8. Texan fans think Okoye is a bust – so he had better come on the cheap if we were to pick him up

  9. chuck_easton says:

Except he just signed with the bears

  10. I’m with Duke…would like to hear what’s up with Lofa. Erik, any news you can share?

  11. GeorgiaHawk says:

I think as a group these young DBs are going to be so much fun to watch as they develop. And that goes for the O-line too!

  12. @Georgia – fun but frustrating. You know there are going to be days where they just look stupid and then the next they will look great. Lets hope we see more of the great than the stupid.

I think it’s time for a position by postion summary again. We haven’t done that is a while now.

Who makes the team and who doesn’t

  13. Dukeshire says:

Lol. I love predicting the roster too, but let’s wait for the first pre-season game, at least.

  14. Sarcasticus says:

A lot of db’s are going to look good against these quarterbacks.

  15. Very interesting comments from Carroll about Branch playing the 3-tech and Mebane moving back to the 1. I’m not so sure Branch is going to work out at the 3. I think Branch is custom-made for the 5-tech position.

I’m just speculating, but here’s my guess: Branch and Mebane will start the year inside, but when Cole returns, he will start at undertackle, Mebane will move back to the 3, and Branch will spend more time at 5-tech where he will excel. Red Bryant may continue to be injury-prone, so Branch could end up starting at 5-tech where he may be nearly as good as Red Bryant at foiling the strong-side running game.

  16. of course I meant that to say the when Cole returns, I think he will start at NT, not undertackle, but you guys probably heard what I meant.

  17. freedom_X says:

Carroll must know what he’s doing, just like when they moved Red Bryant to end. Personally, I think Mebane is better suited for the NT anyway. One criticism I’ve head about Branch is that he doesn’t react quickly – though he’s very intelligent, he seems to overthink what he’s doing on the field and hesitate.

Maybe they can simplify his reads @ the 3-tech, and make it easier for him to untap his physical prowess. Not sure if that’s Carroll’s concept of the 3T.

  18. Mr Williams:
Have you heard anything about SEA acquiring:
    K Brandon Cotou (sp?)
    DT Jay Alford
    TE Dominique Byrd
    OG Paul McQuistan
? Maybe I was just asleep when you made mention previous?

  19. edstang45 says:

Can someone explain why the newly signed FA’s cannot practice until thursday??

  20. BobbyAyala says:

Let’s hope this Branch plays with a bit more fire than the last one.
