The Seahawks announced that the team had come to an agreement on a contract with 21-year-old rookie safety Earl Thomas.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network is reporting it’s a five-year deal worth $21.1 million, with $12.32 guaranteed.

Last year’s 14th overall pick, New Orleans cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, signed a five-year $19 million deal with $11 million in guarantees, so Thomas got a nice bump up from last year’s slot.

“Thank u jesus the deal is finally done bout to go sign the paperwork now….owww let’s do it,” Thomas said via twitter.

Rookie offensive tackle Russell Okung remains the only draft pick unsigned and not in camp.

  1. Nice work Eric. First to report. Could Okung get in before the clock strikes twelve? Would be a nice finish to July just in time for camp!

  2. Dukeshire says:

Excellent! He can take care of his family now, which is the reason he came out early in the first place. He is going to be a great Seahawk for many years to come.

    Okung, you’re up.

  3. Fantastic news! Can’t wait to hear how he’s doing, Okung is hopefully really close to signing.

  4. hickhart says:

I really don’t understand the hold up on Okung, the picks before and after him basically signed $10 million per year contracts. That would leave only the length and guaranteed money the only issues. So 6 years $60 million (and $32 million guaranteed), or 5 years $50 million ($32 million guaranteed).

Unless the Seahawks are putting clauses like: the money is not guaranteed if Okung breaks a finger nail while adusting the seats on new Lexus, I would think this deal should get done soon.

  5. Duke, yeah I think we can all feel good about this guy signing his contract. He’s quite a story.

For those that don’t know Earl Thomas’ story, here’s some of it:
In 1987, Earl’s mother, Debbie, was diagnosed with cervical cancer and was told she might only have six months to live. Doctors recommended she terminate her pregnancy and undergo surgery to save her life. His mother refused, Earl was born, and his mother lived.

Just before he entered his senior year of high school four years ago, his family’s house was destroyed by Hurricane Rita, which also wiped out his grandfather’s church. Less than five years ago, Earl Thomas, his brother and parents lived for a year in one motel room.

So what did Earl go and do? He lettered in four sports in high school… went to Texas A&M and became finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award (nation’s top defensive back) … consensus first-team All-American … 143 tackles, (96 solo), eight TFL, 10 INTs, 33 PBU, five forced fumbles and a blocked punt …. and returned two of his INTs for TDs.

He came out for the draft two years early partly to help his family. On draft day, his family and friends were packed standing-room only in his grandparents’ church Earl’s high school coach was there, and says he told Earl “take care of your family and then put the rest away.” After being drafted by the Seahawks, Earl said the “first thing” he wanted to do once he got paid was build a new house for his parents.

Can anyone begrudge this guy a single penny of what he’s earned? Go Earl!

  6. All I can say Is…. bet he wishes the Chiefs had signed him. Mayock did have him ranked above 5th overall selection S Eric Berry, 5 yr 60M, 34M guaranteed.

In retrospect last years 5, QB Mark Sanchez signed a 5 yr 44.5M, 28 + 8M LTBE guaranteed.

4 overall selection in this years draft, Left Tackle Trent Williams was signed for 6 yr 60M, 36.75M guar

The Chiefs are one of the reasons there need be a rookie structured pay scale. Absolutely absurd to sign a Safety to that kind of money. And look at the 14M they are paying QB Cassel. GM Scott Pioli hasn’t shown the business sense of his former NE team.

In any event the Berry signing will no doubt hamper the Okung signing. Hell, he is making more than T Williams selected 4 overall.
