Tacoma: Deputy City Manager Arellano to leave city

Rey Arellano, Tacoma’s deputy city manager for the past six years and interim manager for six months, will be leaving the city on May 4,  an email sent to city staff by City Manager T.C. Broadnax announced today.

“Rey is leaving the City of Tacoma to actively pursue opportunities to serve as a city manager in a different organization,” Broadnax’s email said.

In December, the City Council selected Broadnax, an assistant in San Antonio, Tex., over Arellano and Lakewood City Manager Andrew Neiditz in the city’s search to replace ousted manager Eric Anderson.

Shortly after the council made its decision, Arellano told The News Tribune he planned to stay in Tacoma.  He was paid a base salary of $210,000.

Recruited by Anderson to Tacoma in 2006, Arellano, a deputy city manager and chief information officer in San Diego, was hired in part to weed out glitches with the city’s new $50 million, problem-riddled SAP software system.  The low-key retired Navy officer later worked on highly technical projects out of the public spotlight.

After Anderson’s ouster, Arellano temporarily assumed the city’s top management position in July 2011 while the city conducted a national search for the city’s next chief executive.

As interim manager, Arellano largely oversaw the city’s handling of a general fund budget crisis that at one point swelled to a projected $31 million shortfall for the 2011-12 budget cycle.  He approved a variety of spending cuts, layoffs, furlough days and other adjustments in helping to close the gap. The city still faces a $11 million shortfall  in the current budget.

We’ll have more details in tomorrow’s News Tribune.  Here’s the full email announcing Arellano’s departure:

Dear City of Tacoma Employees:

It is with mixed emotions that I announce the departure of Rey Arellano, Deputy City Manager, effective May 4, 2012. Rey is leaving the City of Tacoma to actively pursue opportunities to serve as a city manager in a different organization.

I would like to take this time to express my sincere appreciation for the support Rey has provided to me during my transition into the City organization, and for the many contributions he has made in his career at the City.  With Rey’s pending departure, I have determined that I will be eliminating the Deputy City Manager position.

Please join me in wishing Rey well in his future endeavors.

In the Spirit of Excellence!!

T.C. Broadnax

City Manager
