Stony Brook stuns No. 13 Huskies, 62-57; ‘We weren’t there,’ Romar says

SEATTLE The Washington Huskies men’s basketball team had one nonconference game left. It was against Stony Brook, at Hec Edmundson Pavilion, with UW’s unbeaten record heading into Pac-12 play on the line.

The Huskies led by 16 points in the second half. But once the Seawolves grabbed their first lead of the game, they didn’t let go, leaving the 13th-ranked Huskies stunned after a 62-57 loss.

“Mentally, we weren’t there,” said UW coach Lorenzo Romar. “And with so much at stake, you wonder why not.”

Shawn Kemp Jr., Jernard Jarreau key for Huskies in keeping Stony Brook off glass

Shawn Kemp Jr. had one rebound in the Washington Huskies’ victory against Tulane last week.

The Huskies starting post will see most of the responsibilities – along with fellow starter Jernard Jarreau and Robert Upshaw off the bench – for blocking out Stony Brook’s Jameel Warney tonight. Warney leads the NCAA in rebounds per game at 12.8 and the Seawolves (7-6) rank 23rd in the nation overall at 40.7 per game.

Washington will resume Gonzaga basketball series in 2016-17

Washington and Gonzaga will once again play each other on the basketball court.

The UW officially announced the long-anticipated return of the rivalry series, beginning in the 2016-17 season and spanning four years. The games will be played on-campus in Seattle and Spokane, though it has not yet been determined where the series will begin.

UW and Gonzaga haven’t met since Dec. 9, 2006. The Huskies and Bulldogs played each other every season from 1997-98 through 2006-07. Read more »

It’s official: Chris Petersen is Washington’s new coach

Washington has officially announced the hire of Chris Petersen as its new football coach.

“On behalf of the University of Washington and the entire Husky Nation, I am proud to welcome Chris Petersen as our new head football coach,” Washington athletic director Scott Woodward said in a statement released by the school. “Coach Petersen’s success and record are extraordinary, but even more impressive is the man himself. His integrity, work ethic and character make him an outstanding fit and leader of our student-athletes at UW. We are thrilled and proud to call Coach Petersen a Husky.” Read more »
