Last-second jumper by Andrew Andrews lifts Huskies to 52-50 victory at Colorado

BOULDER, Colo. – Before he made the most important shot of his basketball career, Andrew Andrews allowed himself to recall his biggest miss.

As a senior at Benson Tech in Portland, Andrews scored 41 points in the 5A Oregon state championship game against Corvallis High in Eugene. But he will remember most the jumper he missed at the end of regulation, and the heartache of the double-overtime loss that ensued.

Nearly four years later, atonement arrived here at the Coors Events Center, where Andrews lined up a jumper in the waning seconds of the Washington Huskies’ Thursday night game against Colorado.

“Once I got the ball,” Andrews said, “that was kind of just replaying in my head, thinking, ‘man, I missed the shot last time,’ so I’ve got to focus and make it.”

Jernard Jarreau has successful knee surgery; Darin Johnson still day-to-day; more notes and quotes from Lorenzo Romar

Huskies coach Lorenzo Romar met with reporters this morning to preview tomorrow night’s game against Oregon. The transcript is below, but first, a few injury notes:

Here’s the rest of what Romar said:

Lorenzo Romar: Jernard Jarreau ‘hanging in there’ after ACL news

Lorenzo Romar said sophomore Jernard Jarreau is “trying to be brave with it,” but he knows the 6-foot-10 forward is hurting inside after tearing the ACL in his right knee, an injury that will end his season before it really began.

Jarreau will have surgery “pretty shortly,” Romar said. Shawn Kemp Jr. will replace him in the starting lineup.

Romar also said senior forward Perris Blackwell, who missed Sunday’s opener against Seattle with a concussion, will practice Wednesday and will play on Thursday.

Perris Blackwell out with concussion

Washington’s frontcourt depth took another hit on Sunday when it was announced that 6-foot-9 senior forward Perris Blackwell won’t play against Seattle University as he recovers from a concussion.

Blackwell apparently suffered the concussion during Wednesday’s exhibition against Central Washington, and hasn’t quite been cleared yet. Read more »
