On the first practice with full pads, Washington didn’t lose a player to injury on Friday. But the Huskies did see junior linebacker Garrett Gilliland leave the team and received news that starting safety/linebacker Nate Fellner will be out for four weeks with a broken foot.
Coach Steve Sarkisian said Gilliland, who played in 12 games last season and started at outside linebacker against Cal, chose to retire. Gilliland will remain at UW, but will not be on an athletic scholarship.

Fellner was carted off the practice field on Thursday after suffering a foot injury. Sarkisian said the junior broke the fifth metatarsal and would need at least four weeks to recover.
