Jimmy Lake on Eastern Washington and young DBs

Here’s what defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake told reporters earlier today about how his players fared against Hawaii, what he’s expecting from Eastern Washington and who might see more playing time on Saturday.

(Recap of Hawaii game) “I think the guys were focused. I think we played hard. I think early in the game they made a couple catches on us. We were in tight coverage and they made a couple plays, had us on our heels a little bit. But then it was nice as the game moved forward, I thought we played really good red-zone defense. Tackled well. Didn’t let a lot of big runs get out. I’m talking about the secondary. And then they didn’t have any big, long pass plays. So in that regard I was happy. But we were very disappointed we had no turnovers. That’s one of the things that we preach. Our job is to score or get the ball back, and to come out of that game with no turnovers was a disappointment, so hopefully we can improve on that.” Read more »

Huskies defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake met with reporters for a little while this afternoon, covering a range of topics — yes, Budda Baker was one of them — as UW prepares for its Saturday opener at Hawaii.

(What are you like on game day?) “If you’ve done the preparation correctly, you’re still going to have those butterflies. You’re just more excited and ready to go. We’ve done so much preparing all the way back from January on, we knew who we were playing opening day, so we’ve done so much preparation for this game against Hawaii. It’s going to be very nice to watch these guys roll out there and play.” Read more »

Notes, quotes from Chris Petersen’s first Monday press conference of the season

Huskies coach Chris Petersen met with reporters for about 24 minutes today, covering all of the topics you would assume a coach might cover on the Monday before his team’s season opener.

Here are a few quick notes and news items …

— Petersen said former walk-on DB Brian Clay and former walk-on DL Drew Schultz have each been awarded scholarships.

— Some of you asked about Kasen Williams, and why he isn’t listed as a starter on the depth chart. Petersen said Williams isn’t quite 100 percent recovered yet from the leg injury he suffered in October, but that he’ll definitely play and he’s interested to see how he fares in a live setting. Day 3: Defense forces five turnovers at UW camp

The Huskies might need a new airhorn for Thursday’s practice.

The horn sounds each time Washington’s defense forces a turnover during a 1-on-1, 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 period.

On Wednesday morning, it went off five times.

First, senior cornerback Marcus Peters intercepted a pass from Cyler Miles that was intended for Kasen Williams, but Peters was able to snag it when Williams fell to the ground. Read more »

Chris Petersen excited about first UW signing day

Chris Petersen seemed excited about some of the OKGs (Our Kind of Guys) he has spoken of so often when referring to his first recruiting class at the University of Washington.

Petersen couldn’t hold his extreme excitement for signing Bellevue’s Budda Baker very well. He said Baker is a need in the secondary with the loss of so many players from that position and is looking forward to him seeing immediate playing time. Baker might also get some looks in a couple offensive packages and in the return game as he gains more experience.

Petersen touted his

Budda Baker: “At the end of the day, this was my gut feeling”

Budda Baker unveiled his commitment to the University of Washington Tuesday on KING-5 on Tuesday, but made it official with a fax Wednesday morning.

I trekked to Bellevue High to speak with the state of Washington’s top-ranked recruit at 7 this morning. Baker said UW coach Chris Peterson told him he would play free safety and include him in a package on offense as well.

Baker committed to Oregon in December, but decommitted in mid-January. He took an official visit to UW the following weekend, a visit to UCLA the weekend of Jan. 25 then said he

Morning links: Signing day is here, but biggest fish is already on board

First, a programming note: we’re boarding a flight to Salt Lake City later today to cover the basketball team in its Thursday game at Utah. That means I won’t be at Chris Petersen’s signing day press conference. But T.J. Cotterill will be, and you can follow him on Twitter here.

We’ll still track each letter as it comes in this morning in a separate thread I’ll post in a bit.

Now, some links. Read more »
