Romar says he has had no contact with UCLA

Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar said Monday that UCLA has not contacted him about its head coaching vacancy and that he has not reached out to them.

Reports: Howland out at UCLA

Multiple outlets are reporting that UCLA has notified head coach Ben Howland he has been fired.

UPDATE 10 p.m: UCLA has just issued a statement saying, “Contrary to multiple media reports this evening UCLA has not fired men’s basketball coach Ben Howland.”

The first to do so (that I saw) was Adam Zagoria out of New York. He’s pretty plugged into college hoops. Here’s his story from early Saturday afternoon.

Yahoo!, among others, has also now jumped on the story.

Inevitably, Lorenzo Romar’s name will be mentioned somewhere along the line now …

After an awful season in which the UCLA Bruins were picked to win the Pac-12 championship in the preseason, and then came nowhere close to that in a season that featured the dismissal of Reeves Nelson, losses to Loyola Marymount and Middle Tennessee State and then a Sports Illustrated story highlighting all of his failings, Ben Howland will still be the coach of the Bruins next season.

The excellent blog Sports By Brooks first reported that Sports Illustrated is about to release an expose’ about UCLA, particularly drug problems within the program.

SI will post the story to its website sometime Wednesday morning.

UCLA head coach Ben Howland, who is already facing a lot of heat for how bad the Bruins have been this season and the Reeves Nelson fiasco, will take even more criticism. Howland was asked about the upcoming story in his presser today (video above).
