Reports: Howland out at UCLA

Multiple outlets are reporting that UCLA has notified head coach Ben Howland he has been fired.

UPDATE 10 p.m: UCLA has just issued a statement saying, “Contrary to multiple media reports this evening UCLA has not fired men’s basketball coach Ben Howland.”

Ben Howland will be back at UCLA

After an awful season in which the  UCLA Bruins were picked to win the Pac-12 championship in the preseason, and  then came nowhere close to that in a season that featured the dismissal of Reeves Nelson, losses to Loyola Marymount and Middle Tennessee State and then a Sports Illustrated story highlighting all of his failings, Ben Howland will still be the coach of the Bruins next season.

Trouble brewing for Ben Howland and UCLA

The excellent blog Sports By Brooks first reported that Sports Illustrated is about to release an expose’ about UCLA, particularly drug problems within the program.

SI will post the story to its website sometime Wednesday morning.

UCLA head coach Ben Howland, who is already facing a lot of heat for how bad the Bruins have been this season and the Reeves Nelson fiasco, will take even more criticism. Howland was asked about the upcoming story in his presser today (video above).

I thought for 34 minutes we really played tough, really played smart.  We made some really bad mistakes (in the last few minutes).  Number one is costly fouls.  We’re up ten, Josh (Smith) misses a shot and they get the rebound, I think there’s 5:43 to go, No. 23 (C.J.
