Gordon’s departure means ASU has lost two of its top three scorers from last season. Carrick Felix (14.6) graduated and now Gordon (10.1), who was also a solid defender. Jitterbug scorer Jahii Carson (18.5 ppg.) will be back, as is center Jordan Bachynski and forward Jonathan Gilling.

The main problem here for ASU coach Herb Sendek is finding someone to replace Gordon this late in the recruiting game.

Is this the weirdest, most unpredictable Washington team Lorenzo Romar has had?

After Wednesday’s drubbing at Arizona, to come back and beat Arizona State 68-59 seemed unlikely, even against a team the Huskies match up very well with. But, they pulled it out after a 13-point second-half lead was reduced to one.

Washington is just a good fit for what has been a cuckoo for cocoa puffs Pac-12 season.

At least the Pac-12 isn’t boring.

Saturday night was another evening of unpredictable basketball in the conference. Arizona State went into Colorado and won on a layup at the buzzer. Washington State led most of the night against Oregon before it fell in overtime. UCLA slowed Stanford.

Romar hopes ASU game was a “breakthrough” offensively

One of the numerous oddities from the Arizona State game was Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar not taking the glass half-full approach.

“If we’re not going to defend better, we can’t expect to come out on top,” Romar said. “I’ll take it. If we’d have held them to 20 percent and lost, it would have been worse, so we’ll take it for sure, but we just have to do a better job on the defensive end.”

The flip to that is Washington scored 96 points after being in an offensive malaise much of conference play.

Apparently, all the surprise in Pac-12 play took place Thursday. Saturday went as expected. Here’s what we learned:

> Washington State still has a long way to go. The Cougars (2-3, 0-2) thought they had a shot at second-ranked Oregon (5-0, 2-0) when halftime arrived. Down just 23-19, Washington State dashed into the CenturyLink Field lockerroom with high hopes. But, it was a disaster from there on.
