Josh Shirley, the former Washington Huskies defensive end who transferred from UW during the offseason, will be immediately eligible to play this season at UNLV, according to the school.

Shirley, a fifth-year senior, had 18 sacks in three seasons with the Huskies. He missed most of spring practice with an undisclosed illness, and UW announced his intent to transfer in early July.

Shirley came to UW after he was dismissed by UCLA shortly after arriving on campus in June 2010 for his involvement — along with current Seahawks receiver Paul Richardson and Steelers cornerback Shaquille Richardson — in the alleged theft of another student’s backpack.
