Washington officially announced the addition of 7-footer Robert Upshaw on Tuesday night.

Upshaw, who was ranked the 55th best player in the country by ESPNU when coming out of  Fresno’s San Joaquin Memorial, will have to sit out the 2013-14 season under NCAA transfer rules. He chose Washington over Oregon and signed a financial aid agreement with the Huskies.

Upshaw had knee problems his freshman season in addition to being suspended twice for violating team rules. He was finally kicked out of the program for a third transgression last month.

Here’s the full release from Washington:

SEATTLE – Lorenzo Romar added a big man to the Husky men’s basketball roster Tuesday when former Fresno State seven-footer Robert Upshaw signed a financial aid agreement to attend Washington.  Upshaw will be eligible to play three seasons after he sits out the 2013-14 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

“We are very excited to have Robert Upshaw enroll at the University of Washington,” said Romar. “There are not many post guys out there like him in college basketball. We’re anxious to begin working with him to help him reach his overall potential.”

As a freshman in 2013, Upshaw averaged 5.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 22 games – including five starts. He swatted a team-high 39 blocks and logged 360 minutes (16.4 mpg).

His best game came against Washington State on Dec. 9 when he scored a season-high 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting to go with seven rebounds and six blocks. He also had 11 rebounds, six assists and six steals in a victory at UNLV.

Upshaw graduated from Fresno’s San Joaquin Memorial, the same school that produced former Husky Quincy Pondexter. As a senior, Upshaw averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks per game and was named the co-Player of the Year in the County/Metro Athletic Conference.

Upshaw was rated as the No. 4 prospect in the state of California and the 55th overall player in the nation according to the 2012 ESPNU 100.

When Upshaw becomes eligible in 2014-15, he could potentially join a front court that features 6-11 Gilles Dierickx, 6-9 Shawn Kemp, Jr., 6-10 Jernard Jarreau and 6-7 Desmond Simmons.
