Lamont Smith, who was primarily charged with running Washington’s defense last season, is leaving to take a job on the staff at New Mexico.

Steve Alford left New Mexico to take over at UCLA and the Lobos hired Craig Neal to replace Alford. Smith will be joining Neal’s staff after a year at Washington.

Smith replaced Raphael Chillious, who went to Connecticut.

Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar, who first hired Smith as a grad assistant in 1999 at Saint Louis, said Paul Fortier will be shifted back to an assistant’s role. Last season, Fortier was put into a newly created position of Director of Player Personnel.

Romar also said there is no open search for a fourth assistant, at this point. Brad Jackson and Jim Shaw remain on staff.
