Just days after a story broke that the Pac-12’s coordinator of men’s basketball officiating, Ed Rush, had told officials at the Pac-12 Tournament to target Arizona coach Sean Miller, he resigned.
The conference announced Rush’s resignation Thursday is effective immediately.
CBS Sports reported that Rush offered money and trips to officials who would give Miller a technical. Rush and the Pac-12 countered by saying the comments in a meeting of Pac-12 officials at the conference tournament were made in jest.
There was significant public blowback after the Pac-12’s initial statement backing Rush. Conference commissioner Larry Scott did say, however, that the conference was not done looking into the situation. Then came Thursday’s news that Rush was resigning, essentially saving the conference from likely firing him.
Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne weighed in on Twitter:
Although u never want someone to lose their job, this is a good step for the Pac-12 in restoring confidence in the bball officiating program
