It wasn’t pretty. Nor was it dull.
Arizona State held off Utah 55-54 in overtime on Wednesday night to open Pac-12 play. The Utes shot 34.5 percent. The Sun Devils shot 37.1 percent. DirecTV was not calling the conference and begging to have its games after this one.
But, there were some interesting individual performances. Utah big man Jason Washburn had 19 points and 18 rebounds. Utes backup center Dallin Bachysnki had one field goal. It came when he pump faked his brother, Jordan, and drove for a dunk.
ASU speedster Jahii Carson was just 5-for-18 from the field. He scored the game-winning bucket on a drive with 35 seconds left. Utah ended up with several shots to win the game — two from Washburn, one a good look, one not so — yet couldn’t score.
As for Carson, he continues to intrigue. He leads the conference in free-throw attempts because of his constant driving. His jump shot is suspect, however. He was 1-for-6 from behind the 3-point line Wednesday. The one make tied the game to send it to overtime. He’s 3-for-22 from 3 the last six games. He also has a staggering 52 turnovers in 14 games.
Here’s the game story from Doug Haller at the Arizona Republic.
