Steve Sarkisian is 1-0 in Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium. He helped his BYU Cougars to a 28-25 overtime win in the WAC Championship against Wyoming in 1996 that put BYU into the Cotton Bowl.
We wrote about that for today’s paper. Part of that story is how Sarkisian ended up at BYU in the first place. He went from trying to play baseball at USC, to a two-year school, El Camino, to BYU.
He had a monster senior year at BYU when he won the Sammy Baugh Trophy.
Sarkisian threw for 4,027 yards and 33 touchdowns during the regular season (including 536 yards and six TDs in a season-opening 41-37 win over Texas A&M), winning the Sammy Baugh Trophy as the nation’s best passer. He was on one of nine college football covers distributed by TV Guide in December 1996.
Here are some highlights from the WAC title game, where Sarkisian completed 26 of 37 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown, but also lost a fumble that Wyoming scooped and scored.
Here he is throwing the game-winning score in the Cotton Bowl, still the only time the Cougars have played Jan. 1:
