Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins seems to have the title of “third-best tight end in the country” locked up.
He again finished behind Stanford’s Zach Ertz and Notre Dame’s Tyler Eifert on ballots, with this group of selections coming from the Associated Press.
Ertz was actually voted ahead of Eifert, who won the John Mackey Award, to be named first-team All-American. Both Ertz and Eifert are listed as seniors, but each has a year of eligibility remaining. Notre Dame and Stanford list players by academic class. Each have a season remaining if they return to school.
Seferian-Jenkins has already set Washington career records for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns by a tight end. In addition to being named to AP’s third team, he was second-team All-Pac-12 and a finalist for the Mackey Award after catching 63 passes for 789 yards and six TDs.
Again, Ertz’s numbers are similar. The Stanford tight end finished with 66 catches for 837 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games, one more than Seferian-Jenkins played.
Eifert’s receiving numbers were much lower than either of his competitors. He finished with 44 catches for 624 yards and four touchdowns. Eifert also plays on the country’s No. 1 team and at a school that has a national television contract. In addition, he’s renowned as an outstanding blocker.
