A big day today, obviously highlighted by Oregon’s trip to USC. Here’s a look at what is ahead this Saturday:
STANFORD (6-2) at COLORADO (1-7)
11 a.m. PT – FX
STAN leads, 4-3-0.
The Cardinal defense has allowed a net of -13 yards rushing over the last two games and Stanford ranks second in the FBS, allowing just 65.4 yards rushing per game. Its 10 sacks against WSU set a school record and it now ranks third in the nation in sacks.
Cardinal junior RB Stepfan Taylor needs 96 yards to reach 1,000 yards for the third season in his career. He’d join former Cardinal Darin Nelson as the only Stanford players to accomplish that feat, and 12th player to do so in Pac-12 history.
As for Colorado, oi. After being stomped by Oregon last week, hosting Stanford makes life no easier.
Colorado is 3-0 against Stanford at Folsom Field, with its last home meeting with the Cardinal coming in 1990, the Buffaloes’ national championship season. Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who was a senior running back for the Buffs at the time, scored the deciding touchdown with 12 seconds left in a 21-17 win. All three contests in Boulder have been decided by a TD or less.
WASHINGTON STATE (2-6) at UTAH (3-5)
Utah leads, 6-5-0. Last game: Utah, 30-27 OT (2011)
Can the Cougs do it? We keep asking each week, but they keep answering no.
The 49 points by Utah in its win over California last week were the most since the Utes put up 54 in a 54-10 win at BYU last season. Senior RB John White rushed for 105 yards and a pair of TDs vs. California. The Utes are 10-0 when White rushes for 100 or more yards.
Washington State senior QB Jeff Tuel threw for a career-best 401 yards in the 24-17 loss at Stanford. He’s thrown for 300 or more yards four times during his career.
Cougar junior WR Marquess Wilson is second on the school’s career list with 184 career receptions. He needs 12 receptions to pass Michael Bumpus (195, 2004-07) to set the WSU career mark. His 3,134 career receiving yards are a Cougar all-time best, and rank 12th all-time in the Pac-12.
OREGON (8-0) at USC (6-2)
4 p.m. PT – FOX
USC leads, 38-18-2. Last game: USC, 38-35 (2011)
All on the line, again, for Oregon. At times, people get tired of Oregon answering that every week is its Super Bowl. When you actually have a shot at the national title, it’s true and the necessary approach.
This will be the ninth straight meeting in which both teams are ranked.
Oregon has scored 30 or more points in 21 consecutive games, the longest streak in the FBS. The Ducks are 39-2 when scoring 30-plus in the Chip Kelly era, which is only 48 games long. Oregon has scored 42 or more points in 11 straight games, averaging 51.8 points in that stretch.
Sophomore De’Anthony Thomas had 176 all-purpose yards in the win over Colorado, including a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown. He averaged 22.0 yards per touch. Thomas has 1,025 all-purpose yards this season on just 100 touches (10.25 yards per touch).
At Arizona, USC sophomore WR Marqise Lee (345 yards) and junior WR Robert Woods (93 yards) set a USC record for most receiving yards in a game by 2 players (438).
With 926 career completions, USC senior QB Matt Barkley is on the verge of establishing another Pac-12 career record. With two completions he sets USC’s career record (927, Carson Palmer), five completions sets the Pac-12 career mark (930, Arizona’s Nick Foles).
I wish we had Mills Lane to introduce this one. Let’s get it on!
ARIZONA (5-3) at UCLA (6-2)
7:30 p.m. PT – P12N
UCLA leads, 19-15-2. Last game: ARIZ, 48-12 (2011)
Arizona has won the last five games versus UCLA. With UCLA ranked No. 24 this week, it will be Arizona’s sixth game this season vs. a ranked foe.
After a stellar performance in the win over USC in which he threw for 369 yards and rushed for 100 yards, Arizona senior QB Matt Scott now ranks second nationally with 386.1 yards in total offense… UCLA freshman QB Brett Hundley is second in the Pac-12 and 16th nationally with 307.1 yards in total offense. FBS rankings in total offense list Arizona 4th (553.6 avg) and UCLA 12th (502.9 avg)
Sophomore RB Ka’Deem Carey posted his sixth 100-yard rushing game of the season with 119 yards vs. USC. He needs 39 yards to reach 1,000 for the season… UCLA Senior RB Johnathan Franklin posted his 16th career 100-yard ruhsing game with 164 yards at ASU. He has 1,042 yards rushing this season, while his career rushing total now stands at 3,711. He needs just 20 yards to tie Gaston Green’s all-time school record of 3,731.
UCLA sophomore LB Eric Kendricks had a career-high 17 tackles at ASU, the most by a Bruin player since Reggie Carter had 20 by BYU in 2008… Kendricks leads the Pac-12 in tackles with 9.2 per game, while ARIZONA junior LB Jake Fischer is second with 9.0 per game.
ARIZONA STATE (5-3) at OREGON STATE (6-1)
7:30 p.m. PT – P12N
ASU leads, 25-12-1. Last game: ASU, 35-20 (2011)
Arizona State sophomore QB Taylor Kelly has completed 67.7 percent of his passes (147-of-217). The school record for pass completion percentage (over 301 attempts) is 61.8 percent.
Arizona State senior P Josh Hubner has pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 12 times in 30 attempts. He nailed a career-best 73 yard punt against UCLA, helping him to post at 52.6 average on five punts. Hubner ranks fifth in the FBS with at 47.5 yard average.
Oregon State sophomore WR Brandin Cooks collected nine passes for 123 yards in the loss at Washington. It was his fourth 100-yard receiving game this year. He averages 112.9 yards per game and is one of three Pac-12 receivers, all sophomores, to average better than 100 yards per game.
