Meet the Washington Schizophrenics.
Washington has the ability to beat two top-10 teams (Stanford and Oregon State), yet gets waxed on the road by Arizona (who is pretty good, but 52-17?).
Saturday, Washington banged away with Oregon State, handing the seventh-ranked Beavers their first loss of the season, 20-17.
Several players said a column in The Oregonian that called the team soft was a motivating factor. That’s fun and all, but let’s not over do it. Washington’s defense played well against Stanford and USC. That was the group that showed up Saturday night and none were looking toward the press box and taunting after big hits.
Some quick hits from postgame:
- The last time the Huskies beat a previously unbeaten team past the midway point of the season was in 1982 when the Huskies handed 9-0 Arizona State a 17-13 loss on Nov. 13, 1982.
- Washington had knocked off two top-10 teams in the same season four times previously: 2001 (2), 1991 (3), 1984 (2) and 1982 (2). All four of those team played in bowl games.
- The Huskies recorded multiple interceptions (4) for just the second time this season. The only other time came vs. Portland State on Sept. 15 when they picked off two Vikings’ passes.
- Michael Hartvigson’s 31-yard reception was the longest of his career. His previous long was 10 yards and his previous high total for a game was 16 yards.
- UW had 9 pass breakups in the game. They entered today’s action with 14 all season. John Timu entered the game with one pass break up all season. By the 4:00 minute mark of the second quarter he had two in the game.
- Austin Seferian-Jenkins now has 80 career receptions and is 4th on the all-time list. Next up on the list is Rod Jones (81). A complete list of all-time reception leaders by UW tight ends can be found on page 6 of the game notes.
- Seferian-Jenkins became the fifth Husky tight end to pass 1,000 yards in their career. He now has 1,016 receiving yards and trails No.4 John Brady (1,040) on the all-time list..
- The Huskies held the Beavers without a score in the first half, the first time OSU has been shutout in a half this season.
Steve Sarkisian Opening Statement
Obviously excited about the W. I thought our kids showed a great deal of resiliency. It was a tremendous amount of adversity that they were faced with in the game and they continued to show the mental and physical toughness that teams need to possess to beat a top 10-ranked team opponent. At the end of the day I don’t know how pretty it was, we had some penalties and things and that’s a good football team obviously in Oregon State. I was proud of the character ours guys possessed, their ability to persevere when the game could’ve really started swaying in Oregon State’s favor when they notched it up 10-10 but our defense continually came up with stops. As we touch on so many times after games the turnover battle we won 4-1, you give yourselves a pretty good chance to win the game. We got to go play again next Friday.
On playing teams that play hurry up football and like to grind out games
I don’t know if it’s just our personal, our scheme or our depth but it all adds up. Part of it is we have to understand we have to carry the emotion we have at home and bring it on the road with us. I think that’s part of the factor. We’ve played very good defense at home all season long. I think we’ve given up a total of six touchdowns on defense now in five home games so that’s a pretty good ratio. Ultimately looking at whatever we are doing against the teams that hurry us up and stay in an aggressive attack mode, because I think we were in that mode tonight defensively.
On Keith Price’s overall play
Keith’s coming. He is starting to come for us. I thought what was really cool tonight with Keith is when we got Kasen (Williams) isolated one-on-one he took his chances with him and Kasen has the capability when he is one-on-one to go make those types of plays. That was obviously a big one down to the one yard line and then maybe an even bigger one on a third down play later in the fourth quarter into double coverage. He makes a tremendous catch and they tack on 15 (yards). I think Keith is understanding the type of player that Kasen can be and by doing so that is going to help ASJ and Jaydon Mickens who I thought made a couple of big plays tonight for us in the passing game as well. We’ve just got to continue finding consistency and balance.”
Linebacker Princeton Fuimano
On 2nd half momentum change
It felt good. We all executed. We all came out as a team. We played football.
On finishing strong
We all just had to put our heads together. We all faced adversity, but we just had to come out and excute.
On going into next week
Basically, we just have to play and have fun.
Offensive Lineman Drew Schaefer
On successful senior season
It’s good man. It just shows how hard the seniors have worked—the guys that have been in the program for five years now. We’re just trying to go out on a positive note and continuing the program to rise in the right direction. It’s also a testament to the young guys who’ve followed our lead and worked just as hard if not harder.
Kicker Travis Coons
On kicking game winning field goal
It feels good, but it’s not all about me. It’s about the team.
On team atmosphere coming off big win
Huge win. We’re super excited about it, but we still have a lot of work to do, a lot of things to correct. We just have to come back next week and get another win.
What did Coach Sark say at the half, you are up 10-0
We had to go out there and believe that we can succeed. We had to lock on with our jobs and our responsibilities. We had to finish strong.
What was the reaction with that big personal foul call late in the game
Of course we are going to be frustrated with a call, but at the end of the day we have to refocus. I believe the ball came back and we had to lock on to the next play, forget about what happened and go out and get the win.
Any extra incentive with Oregon State this week
They are a good team, they have a well set team. Every game has a winner and a loser, we just have to play hard and believe in each other.
What were your goals coming out of halftime
Coach Sark just told us to keep on fighting and stay after them. Just trying to keep our momentum going and not let any mistakes get in the way.”
A lot of penalties in the game, what happened
We had to keep on fighting and making plays regardless of the calls. We had to keep playing our game.
Overall feeling beating OSU
There was an article earlier in the week, and Coach Sark tested us with our plays and our defense. They were just getting after it today and we had to get out there and do the same. It was a great win. It was for the Huskies, we are tough. This is a very resilient group, and we will always keep on fighting.
Short 6-day week until the next game
We have a short week until Cal next week. We just have to enjoy tonight and get straight back to the grind tomorrow.
OSU HEAD COACH MIKE RILEY
Reaction to the game
We couldn’t get anything going in the first half, and we turned the ball over, so it was a two-fold problem. Then we moved the ball and we still turned it over. I don’t know how many red-zone opportunities or close to the red zone opportunities that we gave up, but it was way too many.
On the turnovers
I think that probably will be the thing we regret the most, having the ball with some opportunities, and turning the ball back to them when we had scoring opportunities. As you can see in a game like that, even if one of those opportunities, if one or two would have turned into field goals, it makes a big difference. But Washington played well, they played hard, and they made some good plays.
On decision to bring Vaz in at the end
It was one of those things where I thought that it would just be good for our team. Cody made some good plays, almost made a couple there at the end.
On how he feels after suffering their first loss
Very disappointing, very hard. The key deal now is our reaction to it, and where we got from here, we are just past the midway point lot of football left. We’ll just get back to work on Monday, and I have a sense these kids will work very hard for next week’s game.
On what the Washington defense did to keep them from getting in a rhythm
Oh they made some plays, I don’t know that they did anything unique.
On their defense
I thought we played a lot of good defense. They didn’t really have that much production nor yards so I thought we played pretty good defense.
QB Sean Mannion
On the game
It was a tough loss against a great opponent. Washington played a great game, I thought they played well tonight. I’m not happy we lost, but this team has great character. We’re going to be ready to go next week, that’s for sure.
On his first interception
I will have to look at the film, but I felt it was a combination of things that went wrong. I misread some things. I’ll learn from it and make better plays next time.
On putting in Cody Vaz
It was a little bit of disappointment obviously, but I support Cody and our team 100% no matter the circumstance and I support what’s best for the team. Would I have liked to play? Obviously, but at the same time I know it’s about the team and not me. I’m behind Cody 110%.
On the hit on Markus Wheaton
It’s unfortunate. I feel bad about it. He’s a good friend of mine and an outstanding leader. And he was supporting us from the sideline the rest of the game. Unfortunately he couldn’t come back in the game but I know you don’t really want to mess around (with an injury).
On the loss
Obviously we are disappointed but there is a long road ahead of us. We will bounce back and prepare for the next game. There is a long road ahead of us and all we can do is learn and that’s the approach we are going to take.
LE Scott Crichton
On Washington’s offense
They ran the ball well. They passed the ball well. They played better than us today.
On offensive turnovers
It’s frustrating but we want to go on the field. We want to be on the field.
On Washington’s running game
I was surprised they were able to run. But I knew they were good running the ball. But I just had a lot of confidence in our defense.
On the loss
We just have to forget about it.
On moving on
We just have to watch the film and move on. Prepare for the next game.
Do you feel you gave this game to Washington?
No. We played our hearts out. That’s the best way to do it. But unfortunately everything went their way. It’s a good game for them.
