Here are a few of the quotes from various Washington players and the opening from head coach Steve Sarkisian:

Head coach Steve Sarkisian:

“Frustrating loss to say the least. That’s two consecutive weeks now that we took the field and we didn’t respond good in the first half of the game. When you’ve got good teams and you go in the locker room ‘down’ it’s hard, and it makes it hard to win. I will say that I was extremely proud of our football team in the second half. I thought they responded, they battled, they competed, they showed a great deal of mental and physical toughness in the second half. We just couldn’t catch a break.”

“I wish we had won them all. I think it’s obvious we were faced with an extremely challenging schedule in the first half of the season but from the looks of its, it’s not getting any easier in the second half. We’ve got a challenge that lies ahead. With all of the adversity I’m proud of the guys for their effort and preparation that they have given us. I would’ve liked to be 4-2 instead of 3-3 after the first six but there are a lot of opportunities that lie ahead of us.”

Rush end Josh Shirley

Big fourth down play, getting the sack on Barkley
“Execute your plays. Finish. We have to finish and execute every play.  Every time we walk on the field we have to be ready and execute our role, no matter what part of the game, we have to be ready and execute.  No matter the down we have to finish every single play.  No matter if it is 1st, 2nd, or 18th down we have to come out and finish every single play.”

Danny Shelton

Halftime Speech from Sark, what fired you up?
“We had to come out and be ready to finish.  Everybody thinks we are going to change with the way the score was in the first half.  We always have to have that mindset that it is 0-0 at any point in the game.  We have to come out and finish and execute.  Sark came out and had his own fire, said to stick to your head, play right and execute.”

Mentality on trying to rush USC
“We knew he was an immobile quarterback.  Not moving to quick.  Our big focus was to keep the man in front of us.  You know the O-line, we just had to give our 6 inches of toughness and never get knocked back.  We tried to have Matt to role out and to change his read, have the linebackers come in and get to him.  Right now we have a lot to work on, with the result this game.  We need to get focused and see what we can do next week.”

Wide Receiver Cody Bruns

On 2nd half momentum change:
“We just came out with our hair on fire, believing in each other. We wanted to come out strong second half being down. We need to come out like that the first half.”

On starting faster
“We just need to come out and have that same intensity that we had in the second half. That’s the mindset that we have to play with game in and game out.”

On going into next week
“Just get back on the horse. Start practice tomorrow and prepare for Arizona. We just have to keep working.”

Wide Receiver DiAndre Campbell

On changes made during halftime
“It was a different mindset coming into the 2nd half. We just have to believe in each other, believe in our game plan, and go out there and execute to the best of our abilities—do what we have to do.”

On what needs to improve:
“We have to take advantage of the opportunities that we get—execute when the opportunity presents itself.”

On what to take from the loss:
“We just have to come out strong from the beginning with our hair on fire, come out and send a message at the beginning of the game, and not wait until the second half to do it.”
