What we saw Saturday:

> The Cougs collapse. Washington State lost in Pullman to Colorado, 35-34. Colorado, one of the worst teams in the country up to this point, came back from 17 points down in the fourth quarter. Washington State had two narrows wins previously — 24-20 over Eastern Washington and 35-27 over UNLV — which it had trouble closing out. After asking to be punished for letting the game get close late, the Cougars finally were. Saturday, once up 31-14 in the fourth quarter, the Cougars ran 18 more offensive plays. They passed on 12 of them. Big win for Jon Embree and Colorado.

> Oregon has a defense. For a while, you could blame the inept Arizona offense for failing to score in the red zone. By the end, the Oregon defense deserved heavy credit. The Ducks stomped Arizona 49-0 in Autzen. What was expected to be a shootout ended up simply being a butt-whipping, even though the Oregon offense looked spotty. That’s a scary thought for the rest of the conference. Washington heads down to Eugene following the Stanford game.

> Oregon State is a conference contender. The Beavers went into UCLA and slowed down Johnathan Franklin, who came into the game as the nation’s leading rusher, for a 27-20 win. Franklin ran for just 45 yards. Oregon State should hop into the rankings this week. The Bruins may be knocked out by the loss.

> The Trojans will be fine. USC leaned on its running game and defense to easily handle Cal 27-9. Was it flashy? No. Did SC look like a top-5 team? No. But, by Nov. 3 when the Trojans host Oregon, it would be surprising if they had more than one loss.

> ASU quarterback Taylor Kelly is pretty good. Kelly was 19 for 26 for 326 yards Saturday during the Sun Devils’ 37-7 dispatching of Utah. Kelly completed 71.7 percent of his passes through four games. “That was a good football team, (and) we totally dominated them,” ASU coach Todd Graham told the Arizona Republic.
