Pretty small practice report thanks to stellar I-5 traffic

OLB Scott Lawyer (groin), DE Talia Crichton (knee), C Drew Schaefer (knee), OLB Taz Stevenson (sick) did not practice.

H-back Cooper Pelluer, who returned to full contact on Wednesday, sat out the second half of practice with ice on his bothersome shoulder.

WR James Johnson was shaken up on a play toward the end of practice and didn’t return. But head coach Steve Sarkisian said he was fine. WR Josh Perkins took a pretty good hit from Will Shamburger in 11-on-11, but he went back in after he got drilled pretty well.

DT Alec Kimble, who had not practiced this spring because of a lower leg injury, was suited up and took part in drills.

Nate Fellner continued to work at linebacker, but it wasn’t just with the nickel packages. Fellner was in at the “Sam” linebacker with the first-team defense in their base package along with Thomas Tutogi and John  Timu. Wilcox characterized the entire linebacker position as wide open and that no one player had locked up a starting spot.

The offensive line continued to move and shift. Erik Kohler worked as the left guard with the first-team offense, while also working as the center for the second-team offensive line.

Offensive line coach Dan Cozzetto said that the Kohler decision is just precautionary. “I won’t go into a season without having four guys that are comfortable with snapping the ball.” Cozzetto also said that at least two of the players from the incoming recruiting class will also get reps as centers.

Another interesting note is that redshirt freshman Dexter Charles will only work on the left side of the line this year — just left guard and left tackle only. Cozzetto said that’s enough for him to learn right now.

WR Kasen Williams caught a long TD pass when CB Marcus Peters, who had good coverage jumped way too soon. Williams hauled in the long pass from Keith Price and scored.

DT Andrew Hudson got a nice interception in 11-on-11, corralling a Keith Price pass that was tipped by Desmond Trufant.
