This game was ugly. Like Sam Cassell ugly. Like Shrek ugly. USC jumped out to a 17-9 lead and then hung around in the second half. But UCLA was just too big and too talented (not hard to do against USC) and pulled away in the second half.

The Wears twins combined for 20 points and 18 rebounds, while Lazeric Jones (above)  finished with 15 points. Josh Smith was held out for the first half for an apparent disciplinary reason. No details of what. He played eight minutes scored five points and was whistled for three fouls.

From coach Ben Howland: Josh was four minutes late to the bus all the way from JW Marriott with the team over to here.  So we left him, and he was late four minutes.  He hasn’t been late one other time the whole year.
But that being said, I wasn’t going to play him in the first half being late four minutes for the team bus.  And it hurt us, because obviously he’s our best inside scoring threat, and we had a real size advantage with him.  It hasn’t been something that’s been a problem in terms of him ever being late to the bus, but I don’t care.  This is too big and too important.

Rapidly improving freshman Byron Wesley had 13 points and seven boards for USC. The Trojans finished the season with a 6-26 record.

The Bruins will play Arizona tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. The Wildcats will be without starting point guard Josiah Turner, who was suspended indefinitely by Sean Miller and didn’t leave Tucson. This comes two days after Miller talked about how much his freshmen need to step up this weekend.  I’m guessing he will be spending his weekend evaluating his future and probably trying to find a new school.
