Sports Illustrated’s investigative story on UCLA is out and isn’t kind to Ben Howland

UPDATED: Here’s some reaction story from the local media … LA Times …. ESPN LA … and  OC Register.

I just finished reading George Dohrmann’s lengthy investigative story on the issues in the UCLA basketball program. It’s an interesting read. Is it damning of the UCLA program? No, it’s more of an indictment of Ben Howland and his handling of the program, his more talented players – specifically Reeves Neleson and the future.

The allegations of drinking and drug use by players isn’t eye-popping. Every team in college basketball deals with that. No matter how talented

Trouble brewing for Ben Howland and UCLA

The excellent blog Sports By Brooks first reported that Sports Illustrated is about to release an expose’ about UCLA, particularly drug problems within the program.

SI will post the story to its website sometime Wednesday morning.

UCLA head coach Ben Howland, who is already facing a lot of heat for how bad the Bruins have been this season and the Reeves Nelson fiasco, will take even more criticism. Howland was asked about the upcoming story in his presser today (video above).

Coach of the year in the Pac-12: Why not Lorenzo Romar?

I got a tweet about this last night and really hadn’t put much thought into it. Then I heard Bob Rondeau discussing  it on KJR today as well. But with the season nearly done, the talk of postseason awards start being mentioned. And in looking at the best candidate for the Pac-12 coach of the year. I’m thinking that the winner should be — Lorenzo Romar. Based on the photo above, he should win every year.

Cynics will say that it’s because I cover UW, or worse that I’m Husky fan or a honk or whatever they are called. I think
