In a move that most people saw coming, head coach Paul Wulff was fired as head coach at Washington State University. Wulff took over for Bill Doba, who was fired after the 2007 season, and inherited a mess of a program with discipline issues, a lack of depth and talent and a general apathy among the players.
He slowly tried to rebuild the program from scratch, forgoing the quick fix of junior college players, instead trying to build it into a self-sustaining program with strong high school-based recruiting classes.
However the wins on the field never game, he finished his tenure 9-40. This season was supposed to be his best but injuries to starting quarterback Jeff Tuel and then later starter Connor Halliday submarined the Cougs bowl hopes.
