FRUSTRATED …. It’s a word or some variation of it that head coach Steve Sarkisian over a dozen times in his postgame press conference. Here’s my game story, where it’s used almost as much.
“The best way to describe that game and how I feel right now is frustrated,” coach Steve Sarkisian said. “It was a frustrating, frustrating game.”
What was the most frustrating aspect for Sarkisian?
• Was it the defense giving up 484 yards of total offense to a team that had failed to break the 300-yard barrier in its previous three games?
• Was it watching Oregon State go 8-for-14 on third-down conversions and 2-for-2 on fourth downs?
• Was it seeing his offense fail to take advantage of a battered Oregon State defense by dropping passes and missing assignments on the line?
“I’m as frustrated as anybody about this game, but I’m also frustrated for our players, for our coaches, for our fans – because I think we can be better than this,” Sarkisian said. “And that’s what’s so frustrating.”
Columnist John McGrath joined me in Corvallis and wrote about all that went wrong.
The defense failed to make clutch stops.
The offense failed to make momentum-turning plays.
For the third time in three weeks, the Huskies’ execution on both sides of the ball was spotty, but this breakdown was more troubling, because their opponent wasn’t Oregon or USC.
Their opponent was a Pacific-12 Conference bottom-feeder whose eight defeats this season include an upset at the hands of Sacramento State.
Nick Montana was pretty emotional after his first college start ended in disappointment (see video above). It was an up and down start. He missed some easy throws, made a few throws and threw an interception and fumbled. But he was far from the reason he lost the game. The notebook also talks about the decision to play Keith Price but not start him, the costly drop of Austin Seferian-Jenkins and the apparent ACL injury suffered by Colin Tanigawa.
From the Oregonian — Here’s Paul Buker’s game story…. Before he got hurt, James Rodgers became the Beavers’ all-time leading receiver. Here’s a blog post with links to all the coverage.
