Jon Wilner of the Mercury News reports that starting safety Delano Howell (above) – younger brother of former Husky linebacker Dan Howell - will not play in Saturday’s game because of a hand injury.

Washington coach Steve Sarkisian raved about the hard-hitting Howell and senior Michael Thomas, and what they allow Stanford to do defensively.

Wilner also writes that Stanford’s season begins with Saturday’s game.

Rather, it was the palpable sense that the Cardinal’s season starts now.

After dominating six second-rate opponents, Stanford enters the heart of its schedule with Saturday’s prime-time showdown against No. 22 Washington.

Then comes USC … and Oregon … and Cal … and Notre Dame … and (possibly) the Pac-12 title game.

“We took care of the things we needed to take care of,” safety Michael Thomas said. “And now we’re in position to control our own destiny within the Pac-12.”

And perhaps beyond.

Here’s Stanford’s weekly recap and preview.
