Here was coach Lorenzo Romar’s take overview take on tonight’s 68-56 loss in Corvallis.
“Congratulations to Oregon State. They did a good job. They played with energy. They were more physical than we were. They killed us on the boards. They were more active.”
On how this loss was like the one at WSU) “One of the issues was defensively again, we weren’t disciplined on defense tonight. We took far too many gambles, far too many chances. We could sit around and talk about what player didn’t get enough shots or what player stepped up. If we’re not disciplined on defense, that is on me. That’s my fault. We have to get our guys to play better defense. It’s just that simple. We’re capable of doing it, we’ve done it before, but we’ve gotten away from it a little bit. This is the third straight game where we haven’t guarded the way that we’re capable of. And if that’s going on, I have to look myself in the mirror and make sure we turn things away. If we would have defended the last three games, we’d have two more victories instead of two more defeats. We can point to the missed threes, point to whatever. It’s not about any of that. We got outrebounded, and we didn’t guard.
Other reactions from other Huskies:
“We got to rotate. When guys are getting beat, we’ve got to have better help-side defense. W3’ve got to get back to playing Husky basketball. It starts with defense.”
Where did that go?) “I don’t know. We’ve got to figure that out. From what the coaches are telling us, we’ve just got to start executing.”
On Romar’s locker room message) “We’ve got to turn it around. We’ve got to learn from our mistakes. We can’t keep doing the same things over and over, because we’re not going to get different results.”
“We’re just not doing what we need to do. We’re not taking care of business the way we’re supposed to. We practice every day. We know exactly what we’re supposed to do. We just need to make sure we take care of that: Not worry about what’s happening on the offense, not making excuses. We just need to do what we need to do.”
Are the defensive problems related to the offensive problems) “Shooting shouldn’t matter if we’re getting stops. We’ve had games in the past where we haven’t shot well. We’ve had games when we’ve won when we haven’t shot well. But it’s because we played defense. That’s how we’ve won in the past. That’s all it takes is to play defense, and that’s what we have to do. All I can say is the defense needs to turn around. The defense needs to turn around.”
“It stars with me. I’m the point guard of this team. I take the blame. I had too many turnovers the last two games. It feels like if I don’t’ play good, the rest of the team don’t play good. They go as I go. I’ve just got to bounce back. I’m not worried too much about making shots, but the defense is killing us.”
“We’re not playing like we usually play. Usually when you thing about Husky basketball you think about full-court pressing, or getting after it, or getting steals. But no, we’re not doing that. We’re taking steps back on the defense end. We’ve just got to fix it ASAP.”
