In heat, Sarkisian one cool customer at Pac-10 media day

Outside, it was warm. Refreshments were laid on the shelf of the podium for each Pacific-10 Conference football coach and appointed player at the conference’ annual preseason media day Thursday at The Rose Bowl.

Steve Sarkisian calmly sat down, surveyed the lay of the land – in this case, the number of media members in attendance – and about the time it was time to talk, he glanced in front of him.

A Gatorade bottle.

And a specific color.

“Got us purple Gatorade,” he said, seizing the opportunity to slide into his presentation. “I like that.”

Oregon grabs top spot in Pac-10 preseason football poll

Greetings from a very sunny and warm Pasadena, right dab in the middle of field at The Rose Bowl for the Pacific-10 Conference preseason football media day.

In terms of where I’m sitting, I could hit a 40-yard field goal through the south end goalposts if I got good foot into it.

Coaches are milling around, talking to television personalities, to other sports-information staff and old friends.

So here is the biggest news so far – Oregon has supplanted Southern California as the preseason Pac-10 favorite among the media.

The defending conference champion Ducks took a league-high 15 first-place votes, and

Getting back to football business at Pac-10 media day

Sarkisian

Hola! No, I haven’t been in ruins on an isolated island or desert the past few months, away from the uncivilized world of football.

The University of Washington went to its offseason. So did I (sort of).

I’m sure most of you just happened to jump to my May-July blogging adventure – the “Green Scene” – which focuses on all the golf activity in the Northwest, including the U.S. Open, U.S. Senior Open and U.S. Amateur (try that for a demanding trifecta).

In fact, after a couple days at Sahalee Country Club talking to the 50-and-over golfers, I jumped on a plane this morning to Burbank, Calif. (Bob Hope International Airport), then on to my comfy lodging in the hills of Pasadena where the Pacific-10 Conference football media day will be held Thursday at The Rose Bowl.

To recap: All 10 coaches, including UW’s Steve Sarkisian, will be attending with one player off their respective teams. On Thursday, it will be senior linebacker Mason Foster in tow.

Unlike previous years when the coaches would fly down from their residences to the one-day conference media festivities, on the orders of new and aggressively-strategic Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott, the headmasters have been back East since Monday, entertaining some of the national media back there.

Pac-10 unveils new logo and website

There’s the logo.

Here’s a link to the new site.

And here’s a release from the conference:

At the launch of its first-ever bicoastal Media Tour, Commissioner Larry Scott today unveiled a series of new initiatives designed to reflect an increasingly fan-friendly, innovative future for the Conference of Champions. In addition to presenting the new Pac-10 logo and the most comprehensive branding effort in the history of the Conference, fans were able to experience a new digital initiative which includes streaming video and a new Pac-10.org website with original content.

These initiatives enable the Pac-10 to

Huskies land touted Shirley amid theft charges

Turns out the Washington Huskies got their man – just 5 1/2 months later than first hoped.

Josh Shirley, one of the coveted “hybrid” defenders on the West Coast from Kaiser High School (Calif.), and a News Tribune “Western 100″ selection for 2010, has signed with the Huskies.

Just 3 1/2 weeks ago, UCLA – the school Shirley chose on national letter of intent day in February over Southern California and the UW – released the linebacker/defensive end after theft charges were filed against he and two other Bruins.

Those charges are still pending in Southern California.

In recent days,

Some audio on the Kavario Middleton dismissal

I’m doing another favor for Todd …

Last night I helped co-host the “Elise at Night show” with Jason Puckett on KJR.

We had on Lakes High coach Dave Miller, who coached Kavario in high school, to talk about what happened.  Dave is a great guy, who you could tell genuinely cares about his former player and was hurt and saddened by the whole situation. You can listen to it HERE

Then later we had Mr. Milles on with us to talk more about Kavario and how it affects the Huskies for the upcoming season. You can listen to

Kavario Middleton dismissed from the UW football team (update)

Greeting from Safeco Field. Todd isn’t near a computer or an internet connection at the moment, but wanted me to post the news that’s been circulating all over the Twittersphere and sports talk radio that tight end and local product Kavario Middleton has been dismissed from the Huskies football team.

Here’s an updated story by Todd:

Kavario Middleton, the former Lakes High star who appeared to be next in a great line of tight ends at the University of Washington football program, was dismissed for a violation of team rules.

The announcement – in an abrupt and brief statement
