Calipari talks about Jones’ UW ‘mistake’

Kentucky coach John Calipari spoke recently with a Portland radio station, giving his account of how five-star recruit Terrence Jones switched from that UW cap to a Kentucky aid agreement.

A recap appears in Eamonn Brennan’s ESPN blog.

But here’s the key segment:

… His explanation for the Jones saga was pretty much what you’d expect:

“Well, we thought that he was coming with us and when he said ‘Washington’ we were like ‘what just happened?’ That was the first thing. Then he called about an hour later and said ‘Cal, I made a mistake. I don’t know what I was doing.’ That is when the thing went like ‘You what?’ So we talked to him and said that we are going to do whatever you want. I am holding your scholarship.”

How he feels about people saying that he shouldn’t have recruited a kid that has already made a verbal commitment to another school:

“I agree, but when the young man calls you and says that I made a mistake, ‘Coach, I want to reconsider this,’ it changed everything. If he had committed to Washington and that was the end of it then we wouldn’t have done anything. But this was a unique situation now. … I don’t mind that Washington fans are upset and upset with me. That is part of what we do here but the reality is that I think, Lorenzo knows and their staff knows this was not our doing.”

  1. Calipari is so full of sh!t…

Okay Coach Cal, I give you a break on the Jones thing, but your line about not recruiting committed kids is garbage. Does the name Enes Kanter ring a bell?

It should, that was the first kid that committed to UW this year that you ripped away. I do blame Romar for not calling him for 2 months after he committed, but you’re still a rat.

I agree with Calipari on this Jones thing…. The Blame goes to Terrance Jones, 100%. Not Coach Cal. 18 years is old enough for to have Characters. He clearly does not. He’s definitely not UW material and I’m glad we don’t have to give him any playing time.

Having said that I have a feeling Jones will regret it. He’s overrated and not that good. He will have a hard time getting playing time at UK. People can disagree with me but we’ll see what he’s made this coming season.

  4. IKnowMoreThanYou says:

I said it before- the UW program doesn’t need a kid that will flake out like this. As Yankinta said, he’ll struggle for playing time at Kentucky as he won’t develop. Had he had his stuff together and came to UW, he’d get a chance to become a great player….his bad!

  5. ecksinoh says:

Word is Cal is working a deal now to get Kentucky a game at Portland next season in the Rose Garden.

    This is a stinky deal.

All I have to say is…once a slimeball, always a slimeball. Coach Cal thinks UW fans are upset. This UW fan isn’t upset. It’s something that I expect from a coach that has put every school he’s coached on probation. Don’t blame the kid. He got taken to school by a slimeball. Reminds me of a used car salesman. This is another reason why the NCAA should not only put a school on probation for not following the rules, but also the coach that was in charge at the time of the infraction. Make Cal go fail in the NBA (again) or coach a High School team for a few years or a decade…I bet he would change his slimy recruiting tactics if he was hit in the wallet. This win at any cost stuff is crazy and has no consequences to the actual person that performed the transgression!? That is a crazy system. It is time the NCAA held Cal accountable!
