No TV for Huskies-Ducks next week

Game times have been announced for the Huskies’ regular-season-ending road trip next week to the Oregon schools.

UW will play the Bucks at 7 p.m. March 4 and the Beavers at 5 p.m. March 6.

And while the Oregon State regular-season-finale will be shown on FSN, the Oregon game — UW’s final appearance at Mac Court — will not be televised. It will be only the second of UW’s 30 regular-season games not to appear on television.

This weekend, the Huskies have a 7 p.m. Saturday game at Washington State, and that one will be show on FSN.

Fields is player of week … & year?

Stanford’s Landry Fields won the latest Pac-10 Player of the Week honor from the league.

And now Jon Wilner of the College Hotline blog in the Bay Area is making the further case that he should be Pac-10 player of the year over Quincy Pondexter or Jerome Randle. (Pondexter has won the weekly honor a Pac-10-high four times, Fields twice, Randle once.)

Here’s Wilner’s post.

Game in review: UW 97, UCLA 68

Here’s our game story.

Here’s columnist Dave Boling’s look at UW’s day in the ESPN spotlight.

And here’s the skimmers’ version:

Star of the game: Quincy Pondexter overcame the emotions of Senior Night to drill his first four shots from the field. He ended up as the game’s top scorer with 20 points. And he came off the court late to a standing ovation from the sellout crowd at Hec Ed.

Key stats: UW shot 67.9 percent in the first half and 59.3 percent for the game. … UCLA shot 36.7 percent in the first half

Huskies takes biggest win ever over UCLA

The Washington Huskies put on a dominating performance for an ESPN audience Saturday.

And senior Quincy Pondexter’s final game at Hec Edmundson Pavilion played out as something close to his fondest dream.

Pondexter started hot, hitting his first four shots, as UW got early separation from UCLA and rolled to a 97-68 win before a sellout crowd and the ESPN audience.

It was Washington’s biggest win ever against UCLA, topping a 22-point victory on 1986.

“This is the image that we wanted to show people,” Pondexter said. “To show them, ‘Man, Pac-10 basketball isn’t a cakewalk.’ To show them, ‘Washington is better than a lot of teams, and maybe better than their record shows.’ We did a great job of trying to convince people that we’re a really good basketball team, because we really are.”

The Huskies took control in a sizzling first half. They easily went over and through UCLA’s 2-3 zone, hitting .679 percent of their shots and surging to a 49-26 halftime lead.

There was never a doubt after that, and Washington ended the game with a 59.3 shooting percentage.

“One of the first things being said is we really shot the ball well tonight, and that is true,” coach Lorenzo Romar said. “But I thought we had such a high level of focus defensively early. And when you have that type of focus it carries over into all aspects of the game.”

Pondexter led all scorers with 20 points. Brought to the bench with about four and a half minutes left, he drew a standing ovation from the crowd and hugged his way down the bench from coaches to players to staff to ushers to fans.

Washington moves to 18-9 on the season and 8-7 in the Pacific-10 Conference. UCLA falls to 12-14 and 7-7.

The Huskies get a lull in the schedule before returning to action Saturday at Washington State.

Pondexter going ‘Senior Night” alone

Around 6 p.m., lone UW senior Quincy Pondexter will be introduced at Hec Ed for what may be the final time. Here’s our story from today’s paper.

And here are some thoughts from coach Lorenzo Romar and Pondexter that didn’t get into the paper.

ROMAR
On Pondexter:
He’s matured on the floor and off the floor emensely. On the floor obviously the numbers speak for themselves and his maturity. But he’s also much more patient.

On Senior Night: I’ve seen guys handle it all kind of ways, but I’ve never seen anyone come out

UW home finale in ESPN spotlight

Hard to imagine that UW is counting down to its final home game of the 2009-10 regular season and the final home game for senior Quincy Pondexter: vs. UCLA at 6 p.m. Saturday.

And while the game itself doesn’t seem to be the prize ESPN might have had in mind when it scheduled “College Gameday’s” visit to Hec Edmundson Pavilion the national telecast of the game, UW coach Lorenzo Romar said today that it remains a big game for both sides.

“If you’ve watched UCLA play lately, they’re playing very good basketball; and right now we’re barely hanging on,” he
