orstteam-logo-washThe Beavers never went away, but the Huskies hung on to take their Pac-10 opener, 76-70. Quincy Pondexter led all scorers with 20 points. Isaiah Thomas had 19.

But let’s just assume that you’ve got other plans in mind for your new years eve and cut straight to the skimming part:

Star of the game: Isaiah Thomas provided 19 points, including 13 — and a lot of energy — in the first half.

Key stats: Both teams had 17 turnovers. UW won the battle of the boards, 40-30.

Quotable: “Oregon State is tough to play against. They do a good job of not letting you get away from them. I told our guys it’s hard to make them go away, the way they play. But give our guys a lot of credit. We made probably too many mental mistakes tonight, but I thought in the first half once we got going our defensive pressure was very good. That allowed us to get out in front.” — Lorenzo Romar

Notes: UW played without sophomore Scott Suggs, who was out with a stomach illness. Romar said Suggs is expected back at practice Friday morning and should be ready for Oegon on Saturday. … UW announced that the Huskies will wear black uniforms in their Jan. 30 home game against Washington State. The school also is encouraging fans to wear black as part of a “blackout” promotion.

Finally, thanks for reading all year. See you in 2010. (By the way, is that going to be spoken as “Two thousand ten” or “Twenty ten”?)

2:37 lef: OSU hanging close: UW, 71-67.

7:45 left: UW, 62-52. Beavers hanging around, Huskies hanging tough. Thomas and Pondexter have 16 each.

Halftime: UW up, 43-33. Isaiah Thomas has 13 points, and Venoy Overton 11. The UW guards have been giving the Beavers fits, forcing them into 12 turnovers.

Washington also dominating the boards, 19-10. Again, it’s the guards doing much of the heavy lifting: MBA and Gant have a combined zero rebounds.

Suggs out sick: Scott Suggs is not on the UW bench, and we have been informed that he is out sick with stomach illness.

1st/11:36 Game of streaks so far. OSU had 10-4 lead, UW tied 10-10; OSU went up 19-10 as they extended 2-1-2 zone and got three straight steals leading to baskets. UW closing again now, down 21-17.

Tipoff: Here we go. Hello, Pac-10; goodbye 2009.

UW lineup: The Huskies will open league play with what has become their new regular lineup: Thomas, Gaddy, MBA, Pondexter and Gant.

Both teams out on the court now: Huskies in white, Beavers in orange.

Elsewhere: Interesting start to the Pac-10 season down in Westwood today, as UCLA found itself enough to upend Arizona State, 72-70.

Also, Oregon just beat the Cougs in double overtime, and USC beat Arizona by six. Details here.

Two hours to tip (seven hours to 2010): As has often been the case this season, C.J. Wilcox is out on the court working with UW assistant Jim Shaw. (And now Darnell Gant has just wandered out.)

BTW, we asked coach Lorenzo Romar this week if he has given any thought to pulling Wilcox’s redshirt in light of the Huskies’ apparent problems with outside shooting. Romar made it clear that he hasn’t wavered since the decision was originally made, citing that it would be unfair to Wilcox.

Afternoon: Here’s our preview of tonight’s Pac-10 Conference opener: Oregon State at UW, 7 p.m., Hec Ed, FSN.

And meanwhile, UW has passed the word that as of this afternoon, about 100 tickets remained available for OSU and about 160 for Oregon at 2 p.m. Saturday.

You can contact the ticket office at 1-206-543-2200, or if you’re feeling lucky, the box office opens 95 minutes prior to tipoff.

Btw, normal gameday blogging planned: pregame news, lineups, in-game updates, postgame notes and quotes before heading off to welcome in the new year.
