Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott announced today that Sami Whitcomb was named the conference’s women’s basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 22-27.

However, Quincy Pondexter did not win this week’s men’s honor despite scoring a combined 47 points in UW wins over Texas A&M and San Francisco.

This week’s men’s award went to senior guard Mike Gerrity of USC. Gerrity also won MVP honors at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii, after leading the Trojans to the tournament title with wins over Western Michigan, Saint Mary’s and No. 20 UNLV. Gerrity averaged 15.7 points, 2.3 assists, 3 rebounds and 1.3 steals, while shooting 18-for-29 (62 percent).

Pondexter was nominated this week, along with Nic Wise of Arizona, Malcolm Armstead of Oregon, Calvin Haynes of Oregon State, Reeves Nelson of UCLA and Klay Thompson of Washington State.

Pondexter had previous won the award on Nov. 16 and Dec. 7.

Here’s part of the Pac-10 release on
Whitcomb, who…

… led the Huskies to a road victory at Western Michigan on Dec. 22, scoring 20 points – on 7-of-15 shooting – while pulling down six rebounds. Whitcomb also collected three steals and dished out a pair of assists.

More importantly, Whitcomb turned a close game into a comfortable victory with a spectacular outburst in the second half. She scored 11 consecutive points for the Huskies, including eight in a near 30-second span.

Whitcomb is the first Washington player to win the award this season. It was the second time the Ventura, Calif., native has won the award since she was honored for her production on the final week of the 2007-08 regular season, which included a victory over then No. 9 California. The Player of the Week honor is the 28th overall for the Huskies.

Whitcomb leads the Huskies in scoring with a 14 points per game average, which ranks 10th in the Pac-10. She’s also the team’s top rebounder with at 6.1 rpg.

The Huskies return to action this weekend, starting with their Pac-10 opener at Oregon on Jan. 1, 2010.
