Scott White a surprise starter

The Huskies put out there official pregame depth chart today, and there were a couple of surprises.

First among them was the reappearance of linebacker Scott White in the starting lineup. White, who briefly left the team after being passed in the depth chart by Dan Howell, now will play alongside Howell and Tahj Bomar, while moving over to start ahead of Chris Stevens and E.J. Savannah.

In a milder surprise, the defensive tackle race between Donny Mateaki and Jordan Reffett remains unsettled.

Among the juco transfers, Jason Wells will start at free safety and Jordan Murchison

Huskies favored by 19.5

The Huskies were off today for the first time since reporting to camp three weeks ago. Therefore, no news out of Montlake today.

However, I did notice something interesting in the small print of today’s News Tribune: The Huskies have opened 19 1/2 point favorites over San Jose State in the season-opener on Saturday.

I’m certainly not surprised the Huskies are solid favorites, but that’s more than I might have expected.

‘Good finish’ to fall camp

The Huskies put what coach Tyrone Willingham called "a good finish" to fall camp with a single practice Saturday in helmets and shoulder pads. Attention was focused on San Jose State, the opening opponent this coming Saturday.

Gold jerseys were worn by defensive end Daniel Te’o-Nesheim (defense) and true freshman Fred Wiggs (scout team).

Practice ended with a field-goal kicking competition in which non-kickers took their best shots. Good field goals subtracted one sprint from the team’s workload. Quarterback Isaiah Stanback contributed a grounder.

Last of two-a-days

The Huskies are on the field for their final practice of two-a-days for the 2006 camp. The team was in helmets and shoulder pads.

C.J. Wallace was dressed with his team, but wasn’t participating in the short portion of practice we watched. Safety Chris Hemphill and safety Jason Wells were wearing red/injury jerseys.

No one seemed to be wearing the No. 1 gold reward jersey.

The highlight of the 25 minutes open to the media was watching coach Tyrone Willingham – a former quarterback – heave a pass about 59 yards from the far 45 yardline into

C.J. Wallace is OK

Starting safety C.J. Wallace, who suffered a concussion in a scary play during a Thursday scrimmage, is OK and promises he will be ready for the season-opener Sept. 2 vs. San Jose State.

Wallace suffered a concussion at a part of the practice that was closed to the media. However, Coach WIllingham today described one of those scary plays where Wallace remained still on the ground while medical personnel reacted cautiously due to fear of a neck injury. Then he was taken by ambulance to the hospital before being released later in the evening.

C.W. Wallace released from hospital

UW starting safety C.J. Wallace suffered a concussion in a team scrimmage Thursday and was taken by ambulance to Harborview Hospital. He was checked and released.

We’ll get an update on his condition from Coach Willingham this afternoon, and naturally I’ll pass that along as soon as I can.

Day 18: Huskies scrimmage

The Huskies got in what will likely be their last serious scrimmage work before kicking off the season a week from Saturday against San Jose State.

Unfortunately, it was closed to the media, so no real word.

The team will hold their final two-a-day workouts of the preseason camp on Friday, and we should also be able to get Coach Willingham’s reaction to the scrimmage then.
