Shelton Sampson’s scholarship restored

The biggest news coming out of Coach Willingham’s press conference Tuesday was the awarding of two scholarships … to a walk-on and a walk-off.

The latter is former Clover Park High School star Shelton Sampson of Lakewood, who walked off the team last season after being shifted to the defensive backfield. Sampson was later allowed to return, but the return of his scholarship wasn’t part of the deal. Still, he worked hard, eventually was returned to tailback due to depth considerations, and is currently running third on the depth chart with a chance of playing Saturday when the Huskies open at home against San Jose State. (I’m planning a more complete story on Sampson for Thursday’s paper.)

The walk-on is fifth-year senior Mark Palaita, currently listed atop the depth chart at fullback.

In the only other significant news, Willingham said receivers Cody Ellis (collarbone) and Quintin Daniels (hand) are the only Huskies expected to miss the San Jose game.

Or to look at it another way: That means defensive end Greyson Gunheim and cornerback Dashon Goldson are expected to play.
