The Huskies’ 2006-07 men’s basketball schedule is mostly set, and it seems to be a bit of an upgrade over last season.
The big non-conference games include a visit from LSU and a trip to Gonzaga. Beyond that, athletic director Todd Turner is still looking for one big-name intersectional opponent to play on the road this season and who will visit Hec Ed in 2007-08.
The teams scheduled to visit Hec Ed this season will include Pepperdine, Sacramento State, Idaho, Eastern Washington, Montana, Portland State and probably Weber State … in addition to the nine other Pac-10 members.
Pepperdine will join UW and two yet-to-be-named schools in the Basketball Travelers Invitational, a round-robin competition of doubleheaders that will tip off the season Nov. 12-14 at Hec Ed. Turner says the two unnamed teams aren’t from BCS conferences, but are “not unknown names.”
And the Invitational games — unlike last season’s BCA Classic games — will be included as part of the season ticket package.
Overall, I’m not sure the schedule is much of an upgrade RPI-wise, but I think the emphasis of Western teams has more fan appeal than schools like American, Cornell and Lehigh that visited last season.
And considering that this season’s team will be far less experienced that last season’s, it’s hard to argue with the idea of letting the new players break in against beatable teams.
