Romar coaching USA team

University of Washington men’s basketball coach Lorenzo Romar has been selected to coach the 2006 USA team that will compete in the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) Americas U18 Championship for Men.

Team trials will be held June 16-18 in San Antonio. Approximately 30 players age 18 and younger will participate. Once the team is selected, practices will continue through June 27.

The tournament will begin June 28 in San Antonio with the championship set for July 2. The tournament will qualify four teams for the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship.

Romar has experience with USA Basketball having assisted Tom Izzo in the 2003 Pan-Am Games and assisting Rick Majerus with the 1997 U22 team in the World Championships.

Romar’s assistants with the U18 team will be Paul Hewitt of Georgia Tech and Jerry Wainwright of DePaul.
