UW hoops schedule evolves

Northern Iowa has been added to the field of the Basketball Travelers Classic to be held Nov. 12-14 at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

The Panthers went 23-10 last season and were a No. 10 seed in the NCAA tournament, losing in the first round to Georgetown. They will join UW and Pepperdine in the season-opening tournament, which has one opening left in the four-team field.

Meanwhile, UW is searching for two other opponents for the coming season. One home date came open when a scheduled game against Montana fell through. The other is the long-sought intersectional road game

Cardinal to Husky

Six-foot-4 guard Tim Morris will play the 2007-08 season with the Huskies after walking away from his scholarship with Stanford.

"It’s not the ideal situation for either," UW coach Lorenzo Romar said. "But he is, No. 1, a very good basketball player. Really, No. 1 he’s a great kid; No. 2, he’s a great basketball player. He’s willing to pay his way if a scholarship is not there. He really liked our situation, and he wanted to finish out in this type of environment."

Romar is in a unique position to know about Morris – the two are

Powe to go

Cal hoops star forward Leon Powe announced Tuesday that he will sign with an agent and will remain in the NBA draft, passing on his junior and senior seasons.

Last season, Powe averaged a Pac-10-leading 20.5 ppg and 10.1 rpg. He was selected a 2005-06 All-Pac-10 player and Associated Press second-team All-American.

With Powe, Cal probably would have ranked among the top two or three contenders for next season’s Pac-10 title. Without him, they project more in the middle of the pack.

Huskies hoops schedule set

The Huskies’ 2006-07 men’s basketball schedule is mostly set, and it seems to be a bit of an upgrade over last season.

The big non-conference games include a visit from LSU and a trip to Gonzaga. Beyond that, athletic director Todd Turner is still looking for one big-name intersectional opponent to play on the road this season and who will visit Hec Ed in 2007-08.

The teams scheduled to visit Hec Ed this season will include Pepperdine, Sacramento State, Idaho, Eastern Washington, Montana, Portland State and probably Weber State … in addition to the nine other Pac-10 members.
