Senior Isaiah Stanback showed why he has emerged as the Washington Huskies’ No. 1 quarterback as he hit three long passes that led the Purple to a 24-3 win over the Gold in UW’s annual spring game.
On Saturday, Stanback capped the opening drive with a 43-yard touchdown to Anthony Russo, who broke wide open past former tailback Shelton Sampson.
The margin jumped to 14-0 when Stanback hit newcomer Chancellor Young for a 55-yard touchdown behind defensive back Durrell Moss, who seemed to be peeking in the offensive backfield.
Finally, Stanback found Cody Ellis for a 67-yard completion that ended at the 1-yard line on a hustling cross-field tackle by Chris Hemphill. However, Kenny James scored on the next play, to put Purple ahead, 21-3, at halftime.
The Gold’s only score came on a 23-yard field goal by Michael Book. The only score of the second half was a 35-yard field goal by Michael Burnstein.
Stanback ended the day 6-of-9 for 190 yards with two TDs and one interception.
The downside of the day was a knee injury suffered by reserve kicker Ryan Perkins, who likely faces surgery that could cost him the coming season.
