Coach Tyrone Willingham said kicker Michael Braunstein had kicked his way to the top of the depth chart, ahead of redshirt freshman Ryan Perkins of Olympia and senior Michael Book of Renton.

"I’m doing the best since I’ve been here right now," Braunstein said. "I’ve finally got my mindset where it needs to be. It’s been a little bit off, just the whole transition, and the hip surgery, and I’ve finally got my head where it needs to go, and I’m ready to start the next two years and do what I came here to do."

Other players who Willingham says have helped themselves during the spring include quarterbacks Isaiah Stanback and Carl Bonnell; tailback Kenny James; receivers Alex Mercier, Corey Williams and Chancellor Young; tight end Michael Gottlieb; offensive tackle Ben Ossai; snapper Danny Morovick; linebackers E.J. Savannah, Chris Stevens and Tahj Bomar; safety-turned-cornerback Dashon Goldson, and safeties Mesphin Forrester and Jason Wells.

In addition to Mercier, Willingham also praised walk-ons Robert Lukevich, a center, and Joshua Gage, a linebacker.

Willingham said junior defensive end Caesar Rayford of Spanaway has shown "some flashes" as a speed rusher, but still needs to improve his basics to become a more rounded player.
