Tourists

The Huskies flew out of Seattle on Tuesday — a day earlier than usual — partly to adjust to the time difference, but also partly because coach Lorenzo Romar wanted these college students to see his historic city.

They managed to get that done Wednesday, taking a tour of the U.S. Capitol, the White House and the International Spy Museum. Yes, there actually is such a thing here, and apparently there was an exhibit in which the Huskies went clanging through an air vent like, I guess, real spies. Also, it gave freshman Artem Wallace — who was born

Rested

All four teams in the DC regional lost early in their conference tournaments.

UW coach Lorenzo Romar wasn’t quite ready to say it was a useful thing for the Huskies to have lost in the first game of the Pac-10 tournament, but forward Mike Jensen said he thought the fresh legs might have helped in the win against Illinois.

Worst question of the post-season

Today was media day at the D.C. regional and someone asked UW coach Lorenzo Romar if the Huskies felt they have an advantage playing “in Washington.”

Romar kind of scunched up his face and asked for a clarification. But the questioner didn’t follow up, leaving everyone to wonder if he didn’t understand that the Huskies are from Washington STATE.

Best good enough?

I thought the most interesting part of media day today was Connecticut pretty much saying that at their best no one can beat them, and Washington not really contradicting it. Several Huskies sort of implied that their best might not be good enough against UConn’s best and that they have to hope UConn has some lapses.

Fortunately for UW, lapses are indeed UConn’s Achillles heal.

Brandon the best?

UConn coach Jim Calhoun today called UW’s Brandon Roy the best player in the country.

It wasn’t just a passing reference, either. He went into great detail on Brandon’s game, and even referenced J.J. Redick and Adam Morrison in saying Brandon is better. He even said Brandon — as a senior — is better than UConn’s own Rudy Gay — a sophomore.

Early departure

The Huskies will fly to D.C. on Tuesday. That’s one day earlier than usual, to accommodate the cross-country flight across three time zones.

But coach Lorenzo Romar doesn’t only want to give the Huskies time to adjust to the time difference. He also wants to give them time for sightseeing around the nation’s capital. Romar said he doesn’t usually do that on road trips, but that DC is a place full of history that he didn’t get to until adulthood, and he doesn’t want his players — who are students, after all — to be next door to history

Confidence

The Huskies held an event for the local media today, and several of the questions seemed to be an indirect version of this: Do you guys actually believe you can beat UConn?

For anyone who has been around the team much this season, it is an unnecessary question.

This team absolutely believes it can beat anyone.

They pull it off without arrogance. They’re fully respectful of UConn, and Brandon Roy said right up front that UConn is the rightful favorite.

However, UW really seems to believe that since they went 3-0 vs. UCLA and Gonzaga, they
