I almost never mention officiating in my stories, but this crew unavoidably became part of the story tonight. UConn took 47 free thows and got 34 of their points that way. Washington got 23 foul shots and 18 points that way.

The technical foul call on Brandon Roy might have been iffy — although Brandon didn’t think he deserved a T. But there was no doubt that the officials made a terrible non-call on a Roy floater that was clearly goaltended. Given the call, UW would have had the lead in overtime. Denied the call, UW never led again… although they still had chances.

And those chances are likely to haunt these guys for a long time. Because it’s pretty close to impossible to watch this game without projecting UW past George Mason and into the Final Four. And then? Well, clearly UW belongs in the conversation of the best teams in the country.

Instead it was just a sad end to the careers of Brandon Roy, Bobby Jones,. Mike Jensen, and Jamaal Williams, who had a great game including a career-high 27 points and his first 3-pointer of the season.
