8-car crash blocking lanes on northbound I-5 near Tacoma Dome

An 8-car collision is blocking two left lanes on northbound Interstate 5 near the Tacoma Dome, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The crash happened about 1:30 p.m. at milepost 134. It’s unclear if there are any injuries.

State troopers and other emergency responders are on scene.

Backups extend to 72nd Street, WSDOT reported at 2:05 p.m.

Demolition work means closures on eastbound SR 16 this week

Continuing demolition work on the eastbound Nalley Valley project means overnight and early morning closures this week, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The closures will take place on eastbound state Route 16 at Union Avenue and the on-ramp from Union Avenue to eastbound SR 16.

They will be from 11 p.m. Thursday to 4 a.m. Friday; 12:30 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. Saturday; 12:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday; and midnight to 4 a.m. Monday.

Traffic will be diverted off SR 16 at Union Avenue. A signed detour will lead drivers to Interstate 5.

CLEARED: WSDOT says crash on northbound I-5 by SR 512 causes backups as far as Bridgeport Way

A semi-car crash on northbound Interstate 5 just south of state Route 512 caused a 13-mile backup Monday afternoon and took three hours to clear.

The State Patrol said the crash happened about 3:30 p.m. when a car slowed to change lanes, which caused another car to slow and a semi to hit the vehicles. The cause was being investigated. Four people were injured, one seriously, the State Patrol said. The wreck was cleared by 6:30 p.m., at which point there was still about a 10-mile backup, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Murray Morgan Bridge to reopen Friday

Tacoma’s Murray Morgan Bridge reopens at noon Friday although work will continue through February, city officials said.

The bridge, which connects downtown Tacoma with the Port of Tacoma and the East Foss Peninsula, closed November 2007 after an inspection found the bridge was structurally deficient.

Rehabilitation of the bridge began in January 2011.

A dedication ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 15. The event will take place near the bridge at the intersection of 11th and A streets. The public is invited.

Eastbound SR 16 to close overnight starting Sunday, South Center Street to close all weekend

South Center Street under the old Nalley Valley viaduct will be closed this weekend and part of state Route 16 will be shut down for several nights as crews continue to demolish the original roadway.

South Center Street between South Pine and Wilkeson streets will close at 9 p.m. Friday and will reopen 4:30 a.m. Monday. A detour will allow access to businesses near the viaduct from South Wilkeson Street.

All eastbound lanes of state Route 16 at Union Avenue and the Union Avenue on-ramp to eastbound state Route 16 will be closed from 12:30 to 7 a.m. Sunday.

Closures planned near 38th Street and northbound I-5 in Tacoma starting Sunday

Starting Sunday night, closures are planned for the on-ramp from 38th Street to northbound Interstate 5 in Tacoma, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Crews will also shut down the collector distributor lanes on northbound I-5 while raised pavement markers are installed. The markers help guide drivers with reflective bumps and shoulder lines.

Detours will be in place for eastbound state Route 16 drivers, we well as those traveling from 38th Street to northbound I-5 and northbound I-5 drivers heading to City Center.

Eastbound SR 16 in Tacoma to close overnight Thursday

Crews will close a section of eastbound state Route 16 in Tacoma late Thursday to continue work on the Nalley Valley project, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The closure will take place at 11 p.m. at Union Avenue. It also includes the on-ramp from Union Avenue to eastbound SR 16. Lanes are expected to reopen by 4 a.m. Friday.

The Nalley Valley project is replacing the existing eastbound SR 16 structure that spans Nalley Valley. It will also finish the SR16 and Sprague Avenue interchange.

CLEARED: Lanes blocked from collision at westbound SR 16 and 6th Avenue

An accident on westbound state Route 16 near 6th Avenue is blocking the left two lanes and causing backups, the state Department of Transportation reported.

The collision happened at 8:45 a.m.

Troopers and WSDOT’s incident response team are on scene.

UPDATE as of 9:19 a.m.: All lanes are clear.
