Animal parts from rendering truck scattered across Interstate 5 near Lakewood

For those asking about the animal parts scattered across northbound Interstate 5 near exit 122 by Lakewood, the State Patrol said about 6 p.m. that a rendering truck had lost some of its load.

It’s not the first time that’s happened here in Pierce County.

Sounds like Monday’s spill is only blocking the right lane.


CLEARED: Crash causing backups on southbound I-5 and westbound SR 512 just north of Bridgeport Way

UPDATE as of 3:45 p.m.: All lanes are cleared, but a four-mile backup remains, according to the state Department of Transportation.

INITIAL POST: A crash that happened at 12:45 p.m. just north of Bridgeport Way on southbound Interstate 5 is causing mile-long backups on both southbound I-5 and state Route 512, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The two right lanes of southbound I-5 are blocked.

State Patrol troopers are at the scene.

UPDATED: One seriously injured in three-car crash that blocked I-5 in Lakewood

UPDATE: The accident was caused by a semi-truck that crashed into the median, blocking all lanes of southbound traffic, according to West Pierce Fire & Rescue. A motor home and sedan hit the semi after it struck the median.

Two people were taken to the hospital, one with serious injuries, said Capt. Jenny Weekes.

UPDATE as of 3:37 p.m.: All lanes are cleared, but a 9 mile backup on southbound I-5 remains, according to WSDOT. There is also a 10 mile back up between Marvin Road and Berkeley on northbound I-5, because of the distraction, WSDOT officials said.

Overnight closure planned on interchange connecting I-5 to SR 512

All ramps connecting Interstate 5 to state Route 512 will close overnight Thursday while state Department of Transportation crews conduct surveys.

The closures will last from 10 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday.

Workers will first close the ramps from northbound I-5 to SR 512 and the ramps from both directions of SR 512 to northbound I-5. When that segment of work is complete, they will reopen the ramps to and from northbound I-5 and close on-ramps from both directions of SR 512 to southbound I-5.

Detours will be in place.


Accident backs up traffic in Lakewood

Traffic near Lakewood Towne Center is snarled by a traffic accident involving a car and a motorcycle.

Police have closed some streets near Bridgeport Way Southwest and Lakewood Towne Center Boulevard.

Reports are that traffic is barely moving, if at all.

Road maintenance on I-5 in Lakewood means closures this week

Crews will be fixing pavement on Interstate 5 in Lakewood part of this week, which means delays for drivers between Thorne Lane and Bridgeport Way.

State Department of Transportation crews will close the right two lanes of northbound I-5 and the on-ramps to northbound I-5 between Thorne Lane and Gravelly Lake Drive during maintenance.

The closures will take place from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Drivers are encouraged to detour onto southbound I-5 to the Berkeley exit, then get on northbound I-5.


Nighttime I-5 lane closures near DuPont expected to start today, last through mid-October

Work starting today to replace 4.5 miles of old Interstate 5 median barrier will close up to two lanes of both the north and southbound freeway at night between Mounts Road in DuPont and Berkeley Avenue in Lakewood.

The work will start in DuPont and move north, and should finish by mid-October, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The project requires that the inside lane of both north and southbound I-5 be closed simultaneously to make room for workers and equipment, and sometimes that two lanes in one direction be shut down.
