Lingering backup on westbound I-90 near Ellensburg adding two hours to Snoqualmie Pass travel

A 20-mile-long traffic backup is adding an extra two hours to the westbound journey across Snoqualmie Pass, the state Department of Transportation is reporting.

The traffic snarl began early Monday afternoon, and it is expected to last at least through later Monday night.

The state is advising motorists to consider taking White Pass or Chinook Pass to reach Western Washington instead of Snoqualmie Pass or Stevens Pass.

The backup is in an area that construction crews have been working to eliminate landslide risks on the highway.  That construction had closed down the pass in recent weeks during a short period

CLEARED: Avalanche work planned on I-90 this morning; eastbound lanes to temporarily close

UPDATE as of 11:22 a.m.: The work is complete and all lanes are open.

INITIAL POST: A section of Interstate 90 in Snoqualmie Pass will close this morning for avalanche control, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Crews will shut down the eastbound lanes at 10:30 a.m. The closure extends from milepost 56 near Gold Creek to milepost 61 near Price Creek, about four miles east of Snoqualmie Pass’ summit.

It’s unknown how long the work will take.


Work on I-90 at Snoqualmie Pass wrapping up for the year

A few last road closures are scheduled on Interstate 90 this week as crews wrap up construction for the season.

Snoqualmie Pass will shut down from 5-6 p.m. tonight and Tuesday while state Department of Transportation workers remove loose rock from the roadway.

Officials say that should be it now that the wider westbound lanes between Hyak and Rocky Run Creek opened Friday.

The work zone should be completely gone by next month, WSDOT reports.

It was part of a $551 million project to widen a five-mile stretch of the highway from four to six lanes.

Speeding tickets from camera at Snoqualmie Pass construction issued in mail

Drivers who sped through the work zone on Interstate 90 at Snoqualmie Pass should expect to receive a citation in the mailbox this week.

The state Department of Transportation said the first batch of tickets from the automated speed enforcement camera was sent to 169 vehicle owners caught between Sept. 17-21. The citations are $137.

More closures on I-90 in Snoqualmie Pass for rock removal

More evening closures are planned this week on Interstate 90 in Snoqualmie Pass.

Crews with the state Department of Transportation are planning to shut a section of the highway from 6:30-7:30 p.m. this week to remove rock from the slopes above the road.

The closure will extend from Hyak at milepost 54 to the Price Creek Sno-Park at milepost 61.

Drivers are advised to expect delays.

WSDOT has also installed automated speed-enforcement cameras in the 5-mile construction zone on I-90, which issue $137 fines to drivers traveling over 60 mph.

Drivers planning to head over the Snoqualmie Pass this weekend are advised to add 90 minutes onto their travel time.

Crews from the state Department of Transportation will close the pass 7-8:30 a.m. Saturday to remove loose rock debris from the area caused by rock blasting.

The closure will extend from Hyak (milepost 54) to the Price Creek Sno-Park (milepost 61).

Rock blasting prompts temporary closures this week on I-90 in Snoqualmie Pass

One lane of Interstate 90 in Snoqualmie Pass will be closed part of this week while crews blast rock in an area near the snowshed. A significant amount of debris could fall on the road, prompting the temporary closures.

The closures will be from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Thursday, crews will close the pass at 7:30 p.m. from Hyak (milepost 54) to Price Creek Sno-Park (milepost 61) to remove debris and check for damage to the highway.

It is unknown what time that section of I-90 will reopen.
