UPDATE: The accident was caused by a semi-truck that crashed into the median, blocking all lanes of southbound traffic, according to West Pierce Fire & Rescue. A motor home and sedan hit the semi after it struck the median.

Two people were taken to the hospital, one with serious injuries, said Capt. Jenny Weekes.

UPDATE as of 3:37 p.m.: All lanes are cleared, but a 9 mile backup on southbound I-5 remains, according to WSDOT. There is also a 10 mile back up between Marvin Road and Berkeley on northbound I-5, because of the distraction, WSDOT officials said.

UPDATE as of 2:05 p.m.: Backups now extend seven miles to 72nd Street in Tacoma. Involved vehicles include a semi-truck, motor home and car, State Patrol trooper Guy Gill said.

UPDATE as if 1:50 p.m.: All southbound lanes of I-5 are now blocked near Berkeley Avenue. Traffic is being diverted onto Berkeley Avenue and back onto southbound I-5, according to WSDOT.

INITIAL POST: Backups are extending from a multiple-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 5 in Lakewood, WSDOT reports.

The crash happened about 1:30 p.m. at milepost 125 near Berkeley Avenue. The two southbound left lanes are blocked, as well as a single northbound lane.

Drivers should expect delays, WSDOT said.
