Expect Stevens Canyon Road delays, closure as roadwork continues

Drivers should expect 20 minute delays on Stevens Canyon Road until Sept. 4, when the road will close early for winter.

Work is continuing on the rehabilitation project that affects about 10 miles of the 19 mile road that connects the east and west ends of Mount Rainier National Park.

The project includes resurfacing the road and fixing up bridges, tunnels, turnouts, retaining walls, guard walls, culverts and a section of the Wonderland Trail adjacent to Reflection Lake.

Crews are working Monday-Friday, causing delays for drivers and bicyclists. Although Stevens Canyon Road usually closes for winter in November, it will close Sept. 4 from just east of the intersection with Paradise Valley Road to the east tunnel portal at Box Canyon.

Visitors can access Backbone Ridge, Box Canyon and adjacent trailheads through the east entrance of the park near state Route 123. Twenty minute delays should also be anticipated at that entrance.

The roadwork is scheduled to continue through mid-September 2013.
