Construction on I-5 could cause long backups Saturday morning near the Highway 16 interchange.
Crews are working through Friday night replacing concrete roadway panels on the freeway, and they won’t be finished until 10 a.m. Saturday.
That’s an hour later than they have been working, and State traffic engineers say that could cause delays.
“Our traffic modeling shows that unless people divert to other routes or delay their I-5 travel until after 10 a.m., we could see several miles of backups on southbound I-5,” said Washington State Transportation spokeswoman Claudia Bingham Baker.
UPDATE as of 1:54 p.m. All lanes are now open. Backups extend to 56th Ave in Tacoma.
INITIAL POST: State troopers are slowing traffic on southbound Interstate 5 at state Route 512 in Lakewood to help with an oversize load, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The rolling slowdown started at 1:40 p.m. It’s unclear how long it will take.
WSDOT reports that all lanes are halted.
Residual backups are almost to 56th Ave in Tacoma.
The boat launch on Hall Road in Vaughn will close for five days, starting Monday, while Pierce County crews fix up the ramp.
The current launch will be replaced with concrete panels.
It will be closed from Monday to Aug. 3. Other brief closures are planned in August for maintenance.
Boaters may use three other boat launches during the closure: Randall Drive NW near Gig Harbor, A Street KPS in Home and 72nd Street KPS near Longbranch.
A collision on state Route 702 in Roy is blocking the roadway, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The crash happened at 1:20 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of SR 702 at 48th Avenue East.
Washington State Patrol troopers and Roy police are on scene.
Expect delays on I-5 between 48th and M streets in Tacoma through the rest of the summer.
The Washington State Department of Transportation is replacing 75 damaged concrete panels on the freeway to create a smoother driving surface.
The concrete is the original road surface laid down when the freeway was built in the 1960s.
Replacement of the panels will require overnight lane closures in both directions of I-5 through the summer, the Transportation Department says.
Nighttime drivers traveling on eastbound State Route 16 across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge should plan for lane closures tonight, Tuesday, July 24, as crews repair damaged sensors in the pavement.
Crews will close all of the Good To Go! electronic toll lanes beginning at 9 p.m. All of the lanes will reopen by 4 a.m. During the closure all vehicles will be detoured through the toll booths.
The on-ramp from 24th Street NW to eastbound SR 16 in Gig Harbor will remain open during the closure.
